Monika Kropshofer (born November 14, 1952 in Neuwied ); is a German painter and photographer . Since the mid-2000s, Kropshofer gained increased fame through her large-format, painted landscape and architectural photographs, which were created on the basis of numerous trips and work stays in Europe , Africa and Asia .

life and work

From 1972 to 1977 Monika Kropshofer initially studied law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . Following her two-year legal clerkship in Mainz , she worked as a lawyer from 1980, first in Mainz, then in Koblenz, and received her doctorate in 1982 . In 1983, Kropshofer founded his own law firm and worked as a trial attorney at the Koblenz Higher Regional Court . In 1990 she gave up this activity to study art history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . At the same time she worked as a freelance artist. In 1995 she finished her studies.

Kropshofer began her autodidactic artistic training with the experimental exploration of various image materials and image carriers. From the beginning, the main focus was on combining various media, especially photography and painting. Kropshofer puts landscape and architecture photographs on a wide variety of image carriers (glass, plastic sheets, photo paper, blinds, plastic films) and then works on them painterly. Kropshofer dispenses with any subsequent digital image processing. The photographs are taken during the artist's regular trips and work stays in Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. Since the mid-2000s, the works have become larger and more expansive, and expansive installations have now also emerged . Kropshofer's artistic engagement always revolves around the formal dialogue between the subject and the media used. Her method for this is the construction and deconstruction of space depending on the respective picture carrier and the revealing of the proportionality of the structures in landscape and architecture with the help of painting. Her works are thus in the tradition of photography's very own discourse , namely the question of image and reality, fiction and reality. The artist lives and works in Boppard .
