NGC 5396 , also listed twice in the catalog as NGC 5375 , is a barred spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core (LINER type) of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is around 109 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 110,000 light years . In 1989 a supernova SN 1989K was observed in NGC 5396 .
It was discovered on April 14, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, S, iR, lbM, almost stellar". This observation is listed as NGC 5396 . John Herschel noted during his observation on May 15, 1830: "If this be III 125, my father's place is much out in RA". To be on the safe side, he assigned his own number, which led to the second entry in the catalog under NGC 5375 .
