Ni Xialian ( Chinese  倪 夏 蓮  /  倪 夏 莲 , Pinyin Ní Xiàlián ; born July 4, 1963 in Shanghai ) is a former Chinese and later Luxembourgish table tennis player . She is team world champion and two-time European champion in singles. At the age of 55 she won bronze at the European Championships in doubles and came third in singles at the 2019 European Games .

Your name is sometimes given as Ni Xia Lian or incorrectly Ni Xi Lian .

Career

Until 1989 Ni Xialian played for China. With their team she won gold at the 1983 World Cup . With Guo Yuehua , she won the mixed title. At the 1985 World Cup she was runner-up in doubles with Cao Yanhua .

In 1989 Ni Xialian left China and moved to Luxembourg. In the 1989/90 season she played in the 2nd Bundesliga at Bayer 05 Uerdingen , after which she appeared in men's teams in the top division of Luxembourg. From 1991 she represented Luxembourg internationally, but at the World Championships in 1991 , 1993 and 1995 she was unable to repeat her earlier successes. From 1996 her international activity increased, as she took part in the European Championship for the first time this year - she reached the quarter-finals in the individual - and from this year the World Cup and the Pro Tour were also held. Ni won gold at the Europe TOP-12 in 1996 , reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup and qualified for the Pro Tour Grand Finals, where she was eliminated in the first round. In 1997 she won the Europe TOP-12 again, made it to the second round of the World Cup and won her first Pro Tour title in the double competition at the Polish Open. At the Grand Finals she reached the quarterfinals. In the following year she was able to win the Europe TOP-12 for the third time in a row and also secured her first European title . Her win at the US Open meant her first and only Pro Tour title win in singles.

In 1999 Ni was able to reach the eighth finals again at the World Cup and even the quarterfinals in doubles, and she qualified for the fourth and last time for the Grand Finals, where she reached the quarterfinals in singles. The following year she became vice European champion in doubles and took part in the Olympic Games for the first time , where she reached the round of 16 with her European partner Peggy Regenwetter in both singles and doubles . In 2000 she and Peggy Regenwetter were voted Luxembourg Team of the Year , and one year later she was named Sportswoman of the Year. In 2001 she made her last World Cup round of 16 , a silver medal at the Europe TOP-12 and fourth place at the World Cup . At the EM 2002 she won two gold medals, one in singles and one in mixed with Lucjan Błaszczyk . In May 2002 she reached 8th place in the world rankings, a personal record. In the years that followed - she was 40 years old in 2003 - she was less active internationally and was therefore temporarily out of the world rankings. In 2007, at the age of 43, she won silver in singles at the 2007 European Championships , from 2008 she was again active at World Championships and was able to qualify for the Olympic Games for the second time this year .

There were no major successes in the years that followed. In 2010 it fell back to 74th place in the world rankings, but then increased again and reached 39th place at the end of 2011. In 2012 she won bronze at the Europe TOP-12 and took part in the Olympic Games for the third time . In doubles with the 20-year-old Sarah de Nutte , she reached the EM quarter-finals in 2013 at the age of 50 , with the Luxembourg team in 17th place at the 2014 Team World Cup . In 2015, the first European Games took place in which Ni reached the round of 16, the following year she qualified for the fourth time for the Olympic Games in which she was among the last 32, just as in the World Cup the following year . In 2018 Ni Xialian fought in doubles with Sarah De Nutte European Championship bronze and in July reached 36th place in the world rankings, her best placement since 2007.

At the European Games in Minsk she came third after defeating Amelie Solja , then the more than 30 years younger number 1 in Europe Bernadette Szőcs and then Linda Bergström. Then she lost the semi-finals against the Portuguese Fu Yu and won the game for 3rd place against the Monegasque Yang Xiaoxin. This qualified her for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, her fifth Olympic Games.

Style of play

Ni Xialian is a left-handed and penholder player . She played with a bat that had short pimples on one side and long pimples on the other. During a game she turned the bat, which made her difficult to predict for her opponents.

Private

Ni Xialian has been with the Swedish table tennis player and trainer Tommy Danielsson , who was married until 2008, for over 10 years and has two children (* 1992 (from first marriage) and 2003). She has been a Luxembourg citizen since April 19, 2000.
