Nikolsk ( Russian: Никольск ) is a city in Penza Oblast ( Russia ) with 22,471 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the Volga plate about 120 km northeast of the oblast capital Penza on the river Wyrgan (according to the map also corn ), a left tributary of the Insa in the river system of the Volga .

Nikolsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The closest railway station is Notschka, about 30 kilometers away on the route ( Moscow -) Ryazan - Rusajewka - Syzran (- Samara ). The city is connected to Notschka by a narrow-gauge railway built in 1936 (goods traffic only, in operation).

history

The town replaces the villages of Nikolskoye (known since 1668) and Pestrovka (known since the 1680s). These grew together when the Nikolsko-Bachmetjewski Sawod crystal factory was built. The place was called from 1761 Nikolo-Pestrowka ; the plant started production in 1764.

In 1928 the status of an urban-type settlement was given under the name Nikolo-Pestrowski and in 1954 the town charter as Nikolsk .

Culture and sights

In Nikolsk there is a museum of glass art and crystal , the origins of which date back to 1798.

economy

In addition to the city-building glass and crystal works Krasny Gigant (Russian for Red Giant ) and Nikolski steklosawod ( Nikolsker Glaswerk ), which produce on the basis of local white quartz sands , there are companies in the wood and food industry.
