Without you is a song by the German New German Hardship band Rammstein from the album Reise, Reise . It was released as the third single on the album on November 22, 2004 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In other countries the single was released at a later date. The song is a slow, black-romantic ballad, the focus of which is the solitude of the lyrical self - as a dilemma in a relationship.

Video

The video clip was filmed from October 23 to October 25, 2004 in Kaunertal and on the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol. The director was Joern Heitmann , who has already directed the videos for the songs Sonne , Mutter und Amerika, among others . On November 8, 2004, the video was first broadcast publicly on TV ( MTV ).

The video shows the band trying to climb a mountain. Singer Till Lindemann falls and is seriously injured. Shortly afterwards, there is a musicless minute that does not appear in the album version, in which the band rests, treats the injured and bassist Oliver Riedel prepares an aluminum plate as a memorial plaque for the doomed man. Then the other band members carry Lindemann to the summit, where he dies at the end of the song with a view of the panorama.

The Austrian alternative band Naked Lunch accused Rammstein of plagiarizing their video clip God , which was released in February 2004 and also shows a mountaineering drama in a snowstorm. Universal asked for work samples from the naked lunch video director Thomas Woschitz in order to explore possibilities for a cooperation in conversation with Rammstein and their management. Woschitz then also submitted the video for God , so it can be assumed as an inspiration. Both Universal and Katapult Filmproduktion , the company responsible for the Rammstein video, rejected the allegations - director Heitmann had never seen the naked lunch work.

Naked Lunch and director Woschitz waived legal advice because the basic idea of both videos - climbing a mountain - was too general to prove plagiarism.

Cover

The CD cover shows a field barn surrounded by heavy fog. The photo comes from the French photographer Fréderic Batier, who also accompanied and photographed the band during the dodgeball tour. The CD itself shows a foggy forest.

publication

The single was released between November 22, 2004 and June 10, 2005 in 17 different countries. A publication in the USA and Great Britain was waived this time. The song was released as a maxi single in a jewel case, as a limited edition in a digipack and occasionally in New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden as a 2-track single. In terms of content, the jewelcase version and the digipack edition do not differ.

interpretation

( Audio sample without drums ) acoustic guitar in the title Ohne DichLoudspeaker.svg

As with every song, the band refuses to give an official interpretation of “Ohne dich”. On the release of the album Reise, Reise , singer and lyricist Till Lindemann said in September 2004: “The album has a really good ballad on it: 'Without you'. Explaining lyrics makes the whole thing less attractive, maybe the fans would even be disappointed afterwards. I leave things better in the space available for everyone to his own interpretation and can contribute his own feeling. "Even the release of the previous album Mother guitarist called Paul Landers , the song" Without You "in an interview as" Monster tearjerker, is there, Still loving you 'give a shit about it. But it's not on the album because we had too many songs. "

history

The song was presented for the first time on April 16, 2000 in the Knaack Club in Berlin before the studio recordings. The band played Ohne dich as the 11th song and thus as the final ballad of the newly presented album Mutter . They later recorded it in the studio along with several other songs. In doing so, they decided on the ballads Nebel (as a prom ballad ) and Mutter and left out Ohne dich completely, since "as a metal band it [makes little sense] to put three ballads on one album". Guitarist Paul Landers stated in an interview: "Maybe one day we will release the [ballad] as a single, without an album". Publishing albumless singles, such as B. The model , should bridge the time between albums, which has not happened since mother . In 2003 the song was recorded again in El Cortijo Studio in Málaga for the album Reise, Reise . The older recording was released on the single as a " beta version ". On November 22nd, 2004 the single was finally released in German-speaking countries.

Versions and remixes

Mina Harker's version

The so-called “Mina Harker's Version” is a remix by the Slovenian band Laibach in a duet with “Mina Harker”. "Mina Harker", after the character from the novel of the same name from Dracula , is a pseudonym of Mina Špiler , the singer of the Slovenian band Melodrom, limited only for this remix .

The version was completed in Ljubljana in October 2004 and is the remix which lyrically deviates most strongly from the original. It is sung by Laibach singers Milan Fras and Mina Špiler , who alternately and simultaneously take over song verses, whereby the refrain "I can't be without you ..." was changed to "You can't be without me ..." based on the duet partner . Musically, the song was complemented by electrical and classical (especially piano) elements.

Sacred mix

The Sacred Mix (English "Holy Mix") is a remix by the co-founder of the Dresden Symphony Orchestra Sven Helbig . Sven Helbig produced the song cycle Mein Herz brennt in 2003 and got to know the band personally. The " Silbermann organ " of the St. Petri town church in Freiberg, Saxony , is played here . The background vocals and the last chorus are missing from the lyrics.

Schiller mix

The mix recorded in Berlin comes from the music project of the same name . Accordingly, the remix has a calm, melodic and electronic music. The rhythm of the “Schiller Mix” differs most strongly from the album edit. The text is almost identical to the original.

Under Byen Remix

This remix was developed by the Danish jazz rock band Under Byen and was created in the "Beathead Studio" in Copenhagen. The main instruments here are percussion and piano. The vocals are slightly distorted and the lyrics are incomplete. At 5:48 minutes it is the longest remix on the maxi CD.

Beta version

Both versions are pretty similar, but the beta version has a stronger use of drums and electronic sounds, while the album version relies more on oboe and strings. In terms of content there are only small differences (reinforced background vocals by Christian Lorenz ).

Live version feat. Apocalyptica

During the “Reise, Reise-Tour” from 2004 to 2005, the band Apocalyptica accompanied the song with cellos .

Cover version by Laibach

In 2004 Laibach created a cover version of "Ohne Dich", in which the text also alludes to Rammstein's inspiration from Laibach.

Cover version by Tommy Finke

In 2007 the German rock singer Tommy Finke covered the song.

Cover version of the Toten Hosen

In 2019 Die Toten Hosen released a new recording of the title. Campino described Ohne Dich as one of the best titles Rammstein would have ever written.
