At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul there was a men's and a women's basketball tournament . The total of 66 games of both tournaments took place in the Jamsil sports hall from September 17th to 30th, 1988. The teams had to go through a qualification system and then entered in Seoul in group and subsequent knockout games. The men's tournament was won by the team from the Soviet Union ahead of Yugoslavia and the USA. Gold in the women's tournament went to the USA team, which prevailed over Yugoslavia and the USSR.

As with the other team sports soccer , handball , hockey and volleyball , regional and international qualification tournaments were held. In order to take part in the Olympic tournament, the respective team had to qualify in these tournaments and this from the Fédération Internationale de Basketball . Only the teams of the host nation South Korea and the Olympic champions of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , who were the USA for both men and women. For men, Spain , the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia qualified in the European qualification, Canada , Brazil and Puerto Rico in the American and Central African Republic and Egypt in the African qualification. There were also the People's Republic of China from Asia and Australia from Oceania. For the women’s tournament , Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria , Czechoslovakia , Australia and the People’s Republic of China could win the qualifying tournament in Kuala Lumpur , which was held in June 1988 .

The organizing committee division for the organization of basketball competitions was established on November 1, 1987 and relocated its office to the Jamsil Sports Hall on April 20, 1988 to begin direct tournament preparations. In total, she owned five managers and 21 senior executives, as well as six members of the SLOOC staff, 446 volunteers and 192 auxiliary staff. The tournaments of the 1986 Asian Games and the pre-Olympic basketball tournament of 1987 were used as test competitions to test and improve operations. The Olympic tournaments were overseen by 28 FIBA ​​officials.

Five training halls were made available to the participating teams. The ball was made by the Morton Rubber Company of Japan.

The Olympic basketball tournaments were shaped by the duel between the great powers Soviet Union and the USA, which met for the first time in twelve years at the Olympic Games. In the men's category, the Soviet team prevailed and won gold, while the USA took bronze. In the women's tournament it turned out the other way around and the USA became Olympic champions, third place went to the team of the USSR. In both tournaments, the respective Yugoslav team was able to move into the final, but lost there and thus won silver.

The meeting of the teams from the USA and the USSR in the semi-finals of the men's tournament

Group A of the men's tournament included South Korea, the USSR, Yugoslavia, Puerto Rico, Australia and Central Africa, while Group B included the USA, Spain, Brazil, the People's Republic of China, Canada and Egypt. In the quarter-finals, the team from Yugoslavia, who defeated Canada 95:73, and that of the USA, who beat Puerto Rico 94:57, clearly prevailed. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, scored 110: 105 against the team from Brazil and Australia prevailed against Spain with a score of 77:74. In the semifinals, the teams from the USA and the USSR met. The USA lost 76:82. Yugoslavia was the second team to qualify for the final. The gold medal went to the team of the Soviet Union, which won the final with 76:63 and thus repeated their success from 1972 in Munich . The team included, among others, Šarūnas Marčiulionis and Rimas Kurtinaitis . The team from Yugoslavia won silver and the USA team bronze, which defeated Australia 78:49 in the game for third place.

After the group stage, the semi-finals came straight away. In contrast to the men, the US women were able to prevail with the 102: 88 against the team of the USSR. Yugoslavia was the second team to reach the final after a 57:56 win against Australia. There the US team won 77:70 against the team from Yugoslavia and won gold. Center player Anne Donovan played a special role in this victory . Another team member was Teresa Edwards , who won one of her four Olympic gold medals. Bronze went to the USSR team, who defeated Australia 68:53 in the small final.
