Olympic Winter Games 2010 / Ice Hockey (Women) / Qualification
The qualification for the 2010 Olympic ice hockey tournament took place between September and October 2008. Two places in the final tournament were played. In addition, there were the six best nations in the IIHF world rankings in 2008.
The two places were played out in a two-stage system between 15 participants. The classification was also based on the 2008 IIHF world rankings. In the last qualifying round, Slovakia and the People's Republic of China secured the remaining two free places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.

The national teams from 7th place in the world rankings played the two remaining places in a two-stage system in qualifying tournaments between September and October 2008. A total of 15 countries registered for the four tournaments.
The winners of the pre-qualification (Norway and Slovakia) reached the second qualifying round, in which they then met the six teams that finished 7th to 12th in the world rankings. There was again played in two groups (C & D) with four teams each. The respective group winners finally qualified for the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
The International Ice Hockey Federation formed a ranking among the non-qualified nations that was also included in the 2010 IIHF world rankings .

The matches in Group A of the found pre-qualifying from 2 to 7 September 2008 at Latvian Liepaja in 1700 seater Olimpiskais Centrs Liepaja instead.
The favored team from Slovakia easily reached the next round of qualification with clear victories over the four competitors. The Latvian hosts lost the all-important game against the eventual winner at the beginning and had to be content with second place. Italy and Croatia followed on the other places. The Bulgarians had to pay a lot of hard work on their debut on the international level, who suffered severe defeats in all four games, including a 0:82 against the Slovaks. They conceded a total of 192 goals in the course of the tournament, while Slovakia scored 105 goals. The record victory of the Slovak women was also the highest victory in a women's game organized by the IIHF.
As the best scorer, Martina Veličková from Slovakia emerged from the tournament with 24 scorer points . Six teammates from Veličková followed on the other places.
A total of 939 spectators attended the ten qualifying games, which corresponds to an average of 93 per game.

The group B games of the pre-qualification took place from September 3rd to 5th, 2008 in Maribor, Slovenia, in the 3,000-seat Ledna dvorana Tabor .
The favored and best placed team from Norway in the IIHF world rankings in 2008 reached the next round of qualification with clear victories over the three competitors. The Slovenian hosts disappointed and clearly lost their three games. The British women, who, as participants in the World Cup in Division II, narrowly beat the Austrians from Division I and thus secured second place behind Norway, provided a little surprise.
The Austrian Denise Altmann and the Norwegian Helene Martinsen emerged as the best scorers from the tournament with seven points each , whereby Altmann scored one more than Martinsen with three goals.

The qualification group C games took place from November 6th to 9th, 2008 in the Hacker-Pschorr Arena in Bad Tölz .
The Slovaks caused a big surprise, who only qualified for the tournament in Germany by winning the tournament in the pre-qualification. After an opening victory over the hosts and the best-positioned Germans in the IIHF world rankings, they also won the decisive match against Kazakhstan, which means that after Germany's victory over France, the tournament victory for the outsider was already certain after the second match day. With a final victory over France, they finished the tournament flawlessly with three wins and only one goal. The Germans disappointed across the board with defeats against Slovakia and Kazakhstan and clearly missed the goal of qualifying for the Olympics as third place.
As the best scorer, Martina Veličková from Slovakia emerged from the tournament with four scorer points . She had already finished the pre-qualification tournament as the player with the best points. With three tournament goals, her teammate Jana Kapustová scored the most goals.

The games of qualifying Group D found from 6 to 9 November 2008 at the China Shanghai sports complex of the Shanghai University of Sports instead.
After the first four games, the two Chinese and Japanese women belonging to the top division emerged as favorites to win the tournament by defeating the Norwegians and Czechs. So on the last day of the match there was the “final” for the group win. The hosts from China won this with a narrow 2-0 victory and thus secured the remaining ticket for the Olympic tournament. The Norwegians, who had only secured their place in the group through the pre-qualification, made it to third place. They defeated the Czech Republic in a close encounter 2-1 in a shootout .
As the best scorer, the Chinese Sun Rui emerged from the tournament with nine scorer points , including six assists . With four tournament goals, the Czech Alena Polenská scored the most goals.
A total of 12,680 spectators attended the six qualifying games, which corresponds to an average of 2,113 per game.
