Ondo is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Akure , which is also the largest city in the state with 420,623 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the south-west of the country and is bordered to the north by the state of Ekiti , to the north-west by the state of Osun , to the north-east by the state of Kogi , to the south by the Atlantic , to the south-east by the state Delta , to the west by the state of Ogun and to the east to the state of Edo .
history
The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "Western". The first governor was Ita David Ikpeme between March 1976 and July 1978. On October 1, 1996, the four northern Local Government Areas were separated from Ondo and combined to form the new state of Ekiti . The current governor since April 14, 2007 is Olusegun Mimiko .

The state is divided into 18 Local Government Areas . These are: Akoko North-East, Akoko North-West, Akoko South-East, Akoko South-West, Akure North, Akure South, Ese-Odo, Idanre, Ifedore, Ijaye, Ile-Oluji-Okeigbo, Irele, Odigbo, Okitipupa , Ondo East, Ondo West, Ose and Owo.
economy
The agriculture and fishing are the main economic activities in Ondo. Among other things, cocoa , yams , manioc and coconuts are grown. The state is the leading cocoa producer in Nigeria.
