background

Otis Redding had been under contract with Stax Records since 1962 . His previous two albums, Pain in My Heart (1964) and The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (1965), already made good positions on the Billboard album charts, but Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul was recognized as his commercial and artistic breakthrough . In addition to original compositions such as the song Respect , which became a world hit two years later in the cover version of Aretha Franklin , the album also contains three songs from the pen of Sam Cooke , who was shot in December 1964 and who, next to Little Richard, was Redding's greatest role model. He also reinterpreted the songs My Girl by The Temptations , Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones , Down in the Valley by Solomon Burke , Rock Me Baby by BB King and William Bells You Don't Miss Your Water . During the recordings Otis Redding was the house band Booker T. & the MG's accompanied the labels from Booker T. Jones , Steve Cropper , Donald "Duck" Dunn and Al Jackson, Jr. was. Other studio musicians were Wayne Jackson , Floyd Newman and Andrew Love from the brass sections The Mar-Keys and The Memphis Horns and Isaac Hayes on piano.

The renowned sound engineer Tom Dowd , who previously worked with John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman , was able to convince music producer Jim Stewart to record Otis Blue as a stereo album, whereby Stewart also insisted on a mono output.

The album reached number one on the US Billboard R&B album chart and number 75 on the Billboard 200 . In Great Britain it received a silver record in 2004 .

The song I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now) was released. a. Covered by Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Percy Sledge .

The identity of the blonde woman on the album cover is unclear. It is said to have a similarity to Andy Warhol's muse Nico and the German model Dagmar Dreger. The photography is by Pete Sahula.

The magazine Uncut leads Otis Blue at number 41 of the 200 best albums. Mojo voted it number 31 on the Top 100 Albums. The album is one of the 1001 albums You Must Hear Before You Die and was included in the compilation of the 100 most important albums by Time magazine .

“The tracks are a mixture of original compositions and cover versions - and two by Redding's role model Sam Cooke - but the intensity of the presentation is entirely down to Otis. 'Respect' is confident and punchy, while 'Down in the Valley' is sentimental and funky at the same time. There is also a cover of 'Satisfaction' by the Stones - perhaps ironically meant, after all, they brought black soul back to the USA - which completely dwarfs Jagger's singing. The album was the first step to fame. Then in 1967 he performed at the Monterey Festival , where he fascinated a mostly white audience with songs like 'Try A Little Tenderness'. At the end he said: 'I have to go now, although I don't really want to.' "

- Seth Jacobson

“ Redding expanded his repertoire with Otis Blue . As expected, there was a cover of a Sam Cooke song, "Shake", sung Vulcan by Redding. There was also a version of the Rolling Stones song "Satisfaction" and the original Reddings "Respect", which later also became a hit for Aretha Franklin , but was sung by Reddig with such human and racial pride that he overran the arguments civil rights in the 60s had a considerable rousing effect. "
