Palmetto is a city in Manatee County in the US state of Florida with 12,606 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Palmetto is located on the north bank of the Manatee River , which flows into the Gulf of Mexico here . The city borders Bradenton in the south and is about 60 km south of Tampa .

history

Palmetto was declared a city in 1897 . 1919 was built by the Tampa Southern Railway , a subsidiary of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad , a railway line from Tampa to Palmetto, which was extended to Bradenton in 1920 .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 12,606 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 7,150 households. The population density was 1125.5 inh / km². 72.1% of the population identified themselves as whites , 10.5% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 14.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 28.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 39.5% of all households lived in 27.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 65.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07.

24.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 28.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 50.2% of the population were male and 49.8% were female.

The median annual income was $ 37,175, with 18.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 78.47% of the population, 21.04% spoke Spanish and 0.49% spoke German .

Palmetto is crossed by US Highways 41 ( Tamiami Trail ) and 301 . The nearest airport is Sarasota – Bradenton International Airport (around 20 km south).

The crime rate in 2010 was 615 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were two murders, two rapes, 59 robberies, 138 physical injuries, 249 break-ins, 390 thefts, 22 car thefts and two arson attacks.
