Paul Reubens
Paul Reubens (born August 27, 1952 in Peekskill , New York ; born Paul Rubenfeld ) is an American actor and designer .
Life and accomplishments
Reubens grew up in Florida where his parents ran a shop. He played in a theater as a child. In 1970 he began studying at Boston University , which he dropped out after a year. Reubens moved to Hollywood and was taught at the California Institute of the Arts .
The actor made his debut alongside John Belushi , Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray in the television comedy Things We Did Last Summer from 1977. In the comedy Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (1980), he played alongside Cheech Marin one of the larger roles. In 1985, Tim Burton shot his first feature - length film Pee-Wee's insane adventure based on a script by Reubens , which grossed five times its cost and became a cult film. From 1986 to 1991 he appeared as Pee-wee Herman in the television series Pee-wee's Playhouse ; he also designed titles, directed and scripted several episodes. As a screenwriter, he was nominated for the Daytime Emmy in 1987 and 1988 ; in 1991 he received two Daytime Emmys for title design. In 1988 the adventure comedy Manege was released free for Pee Wee , in which Reubens took the lead role; at his side played among others Penelope Ann Miller , Kris Kristofferson and Valeria Golino .
In 1988, Reubens received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . A year later, his involvement in the production design of the television program Christmas Special earned him an Emmy nomination . His guest role on the television series Murphy Brown earned him another Emmy nomination in 1995. His major roles include those in the horror comedy Buffy - The Vampire Killer (1992) and in the fantasy comedy Mystery Men (1999), in which he appeared alongside Hank Azaria , Ben Stiller , William H. Macy , Janeane Garofalo and Greg Kinnear .
Reubens was arrested in 1991 for causing public nuisance after masturbating in a porn theater. The case was widely commented on in the media at this time, as the events did not suit the childlike character portrayed by Reubens. The actor withdrew from the public for a while in the ensuing period. In 2001, he was charged with possession of pornography . According to the prosecutor, some of the photos are said to have been recordings of children, but older material that, according to Reubens, was legal at the time of publication. The case was downgraded to "profanity" and Reubens was fined $ 135 .
