Peter Homann (born February 27, 1959 in Berlin ) is a German photographer .

Peter Homann is known for his Kreuzberg, demonstration and squatter photos in West Berlin in the 1980s. His work focuses on politics, cultural events and travel photos.

Life

Peter Homann started taking photos at the age of 18. First of all, in his spare time, he recorded everything that came before the lens. He got by with unskilled labor and after work and on the weekends he photographed everyday life in Kreuzberg with his internship L2 camera . Then he developed his black and white pictures in his own photo laboratory.

At the end of the 1970s, the first protests against the housing shortage and demolition took place in Kreuzberg. These aroused the political interest in Homann and the will to capture these events in pictures. From the end of 1980 the squatters took place in West Berlin , it was the beginning of the repair squatters movement. Here Homann photographed the protests and clashes with the police at demonstrations. During this time he already had regular publications in newspapers and magazines. The city magazine zitty was a grateful recipient of his photos. The freelance work at zitty lasted until 1991.

In 1982 Homann took the plunge into self-employment and self-published photo calendars and photo postcards. From 1983 Homann worked for the taz and in 1984 began working for the socialist daily newspaper Die Truth , for which he was a permanent freelance photographer until the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the GDR in 1990. However, within a few days the newspaper was shut down due to lack of funds.

In 1990, Peter Homann and the writing journalist Michael Ringelsiep founded the counterpressure press agency, which has been in existence to this day with changing members and has also published complete photo reports and two books. From 1992 to 2006, Homann took photos at film festivals such as the Berlinale , and in the 1990s also at the Potsdam Film Festival and the Munich Film Festival (for the Märkische Allgemeine ). From 1994 to 1999 Homann was responsible for the photo documentation of the week of encounters with art and culture in the state of Brandenburg. The guests were Israel, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Italy.

On several trips in Europe, Homann took numerous travel photos, among others in Crete, Paris, in southern France and in Vienna.

In addition to zitty and taz, Homann had publications in Stern (in May 1987 a double page about the May riots in Kreuzberg and in February 2003 a double page about the protests against the Iraq war in Berlin), in Spiegel , in other magazines and in several books .

Also since the 1990s, Peter Homann has been taking photos regularly on the street at demonstrations, for example against neo-Nazi marches, at Hartz IV protests or at the Occupy demonstrations. He still works as a press photographer at demonstrations. For many years he has been particularly interested in the tenant movement in Berlin. He regularly photographs for Berlin tenant magazines. Homann has used Canon EOS digital cameras for many years .

From 2010 to 2018 Peter Homann was represented by the press photo agency bsd-photo-archiv, where you can find current photos as well as his earlier photos from the 1980s.
