history

It is believed that the village originated from the Roman settlement Decebaluma .

At the beginning of the 16th century the village had 35 houses, only in the last few centuries did the number of inhabitants increase in height. The inhabitants of the village, Wallachians , originally came from the south before settling in Prahovo.

In the 17th century, most of the residents were farmers who kept pigs or sheep. The Serbian Orthodox Ascension Church in Prahovo was built in 1872.

On September 6th and 7th, 1944, the “Black Sea Fleet” of the German Navy was sunk in the Danube on the orders of Rear Admiral (Ing.) Paul-Willy Zieb in order to make the waterway impassable. An estimated 150 to 200 ships up to 20 kilometers in length were also cut off from retreating across the Danube. The Red Army already controlled the Romanian bank of the Iron Gate , but could not attack the mostly smaller German ships because of an island and swamps in front of it. The Wehrmacht still ruled the Serbian bank, but was threatened by advancing Yugoslav partisans . According to eyewitness reports, the ships were wedged together, flooded and explosions triggered inside. Some wrecks were cleared from the fairway with the Sutjeska ship's crane so that ships could pass at all. In 2009, 64 years after the Second World War, the remaining wrecks of old German warships were causing problems for international navigation on the Danube . With the help of local divers and Dutch experts, the wrecks were located and surveyed in 2009, with at least 21 ships in or near the fairway, which obstruct cargo ships and river cruise ships . Up to 30 million euros must be raised for the rescue.

Residents

The 2002 census (self-denominated) showed that 1,506 people live in the village.

Other censuses:

  • 1948: 2.186
  • 1953: 2.174
  • 1961: 2,600
  • 1971: 2,455
  • 1981: 2,412

economy

Reconstruction of the production facilities

The economy of the place was determined for decades by the chemical company IHP (Industrija hemijskih proizvoda) Prahovo , about two kilometers to the east , whose construction began in 1960. A Danube port and a train station were created for this purpose. After years of decline, privatization followed in 2007 with the sale to the Greek company Neochimiki . At that time the company still had 500 employees. However, Neochimiki could not keep the promises made at the time of purchase, whereupon the privatization was reversed. In July 2012, the Šabac- based fertilizer manufacturer Elixir bought the fertilizer division of IHP Prahovo and initially promised to employ 150 people.

Reconstruction of the "IHP Prahovo" factory

The company "Elixir Grupa" has already started modernizing the production facilities there and is planning an investment with a total value of EUR 24 million by 2015.

Infrastructure

Prahovo has three train stations. Prahovo Pristanište forms the end point of the route to Crveni Krst in the Opština Niš . There are three pairs of trains running here every day to Zaječar and one pair to Niš, which also serve Prahovo station. The Prahovo Fabrika stop , on the other hand, is not used for passenger transport.

In 2008, new signs were installed to mark the Danube Cycle Path. This company was funded by the European Union .

About two kilometers west of Prahovo, the Kusjak border crossing to Romania was opened on December 28, 2011. The dam of the Eisernes Tor 2 power plant is used for this .

education

There is a comprehensive school in the village that goes up to 9th grade.

Sports

South of the village is the "stadium" Prahovo. It is a grass pitch with two stands, each with three rows of seats. It is the home ground of the regional league football club FK Prahovo Dunav, which was founded in 1947.
