The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea is appointed by the President with the approval of the South Korean National Assembly ( Gukhoe ) . Chung Sye-kyun has been Prime Minister in office since January 14, 2020 .

The Prime Minister of South Korea, which has a semi-presidential system, does not need to be a member of parliament . He supports the president, monitors the work of the ministries and recommends ministers . The Prime Minister becomes Interim President of South Korea if the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office.
Appointment
The office was created in August 1948 with the establishment of the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Between 1961 and 1963, the official title was Chief Cabinet Minister .
