Rebel Heart is the thirteenth studio album by the American singer Madonna . It was released worldwide in March 2015 and was able to place itself at the top of the charts in some countries, while the single releases Living for love and Ghosttown reached rather mediocre chart positions. For the successor to MDNA , Madonna worked with various producers, including Avicii .

Emergence

After completing the commercially successful MDNA Tour 2012 and producing the accompanying DVD, Madonna first mentioned the planning of a new studio album in early 2014. Producers like Avicii and Diplo were named for this, as well as Toby Gad , Blood Diamonds , Ryan Tedder , Kanye West , Ariel Rechtshaid and Madonna himself. On December 20, 2014, March 10, 2015 was announced as the release date, in Germany Rebel Heart was released on March 6th in three different versions.

Leaks

Towards the end of 2014, over twenty songs from the new album were illegally published on the Internet. Madonna responded on her Instagram page and called the leak an "artistic rape". The fact that she also equated the publication with “terrorism” was sharply criticized in view of some acts of violence in the weeks before. The comment was withdrawn a short time later and with the sentences “Thank you for not listening! Thank you for your loyalty ”.

On December 22nd, the album was surprisingly offered for pre-order in the iTunes Store . Six tracks were available for purchase, and another 13 were available for pre-order. Madonna tweeted to fans that the songs were considered an "early Christmas present".

Sales & Charts

The album reached number one in many countries including Germany , Australia , the Netherlands , Spain , Switzerland , Austria , Belgium and Canada . In the UK and the US, Rebel Heart debuted in second place. However, the album was only able to stay in the top positions for a short time and fell out of the top ten in most countries after just a few weeks.

Around 315,000 copies of the album were sold in the release week. 116,000 units were sold in the USA in the first week - the second worst value in Madonna's career. In the second week there were only 22,000 copies (a decrease of almost 80 percent) and 13,000 copies in week three. Rebel Heart is the worst-selling Madonna album in the last 20 years.

criticism

Rebel Heart was mostly rated very mixed, but is considered by many fans as Madonna's best album since Confessions on a Dance Floor . Songs like Living for Love , Ghosttown and Veni Vidi Vici were particularly praised, as well as their collaborations with various artists, such as Nicki Minaj in Bitch I'm Madonna or Mike Tyson and Chance The Rapper in Iconic . Sebastian Leber from the German Tagesspiegel was more critical , who criticized the titles SEX and Holy Water for their calculated sexual content and noted that Madonna should leave such songs to younger artists. Matthias Reichelt from CD.Starts was even more negative : He wrote that Madonna threw half-baked electro songs and couldn't even begin to convince lyrically or musically. Overall, the album sounds “boring, boring and terribly thin”. Inside Out , Joan Of Arc , Living For Love , and HeartBreak City are the only bright spots . On the other hand, Jochen Siemens' criticism of Stern.de was positive . In his opinion, Madonna focused on her strengths. He also praised the fact that she appeared more mature and no longer ran away from her age. The website Focus.de was also positive and wrote that the album was made of ultra-modern, perfect pop, which was "breathed in by the Queen Of Pop soul".

promotion

Madonna gave her first live performance of Living for Love at the 2015 Grammy Awards . In advance, she caused a scandal by exposing her bare bottom on the red carpet. Another appearance followed at the Brit Awards 2015, where she fell from part of the stage in the opening sequence due to a jerk on her cape. After the accident, she brought the critically acclaimed performance to an end. She has appeared on the Jonathan Ross Show , Le Grand Journal and Howard Stern, among others . In March, Madonna presented songs from the album on the Ellen DeGeneres Show for a week , gave interviews and mentioned her planned Rebel Heart Tour , which will take her to Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America.
