Robert Sedlacek (born July 15, 1955 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian football referee and current football official who has been President of the Vienna Football Association (WFV) since 2010 .

Career

Robert Sedlacek was born on July 15, 1955 in Vienna and began his career as a soccer referee in the lower leagues before he was appointed referee of the 2nd division and was allowed to lead professional games for the first time. In the season 1987/88 he rose to a Bundesliga referee and led on August 29, 1987 with the game SK Sturm Graz against SK VÖEST Linz his first encounter in the highest Austrian football league. This season there were five more Bundesliga appearances (two in the regular season and three in the play-offs), with Sedlacek awarding six yellow cards and one red in all six games ; he also pointed once to the penalty spot . In 1988/89 Sedlacek led six games in the Bundesliga and two in the play-offs, in 1989/90 there were also eight (five in the Bundesliga and three in the play-offs) and in 1990/91 seven games in the Bundesliga, one in the upper play-offs and another three games in the middle play-offs.

From the 1991/92 season Sedlacek was used even more regularly than in the previous seasons and in the following eight seasons never came under ten directors in the Bundesliga and additional games in the play-offs. In addition, over the years he was also a regularly used referee in the second-class Austrian 2nd division, which was later held under the name Erste Liga . In the 1990s Sedlacek also rose to the position of FIFA referee and from then on also led international matches several times a year. At the 1993/94 UEFA Cup he was referee of the first round first leg between Norwich City and Vitesse Arnhem and the second round first leg between CD Tenerife and Olympiacos Piraeus . In addition, on April 6, 1994, he was in charge of the friendly international match between Hungary and Slovenia .

In 1994/95, in addition to his numerous appearances in Austrian football, the native of Vienna was also involved in three qualifying matches for the 1996 European Championship as a game director. As such, he led the match between Romania and Azerbaijan on September 7, 1994 , the game Poland against Slovakia on June 7, 1995 and the game between the Netherlands and Belarus on September 6, 1995 . In addition to various operations in Austria he was in the following season 1995/96 as a FIFA referee in the match of the then reigning Russian champion FC Alania Vladikavkaz and the then Belgian runners-up RSC Anderlecht in the first leg of the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1996/97 in use .

On November 6, 1996 Sedlacek chaired the UN peace game between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy , which went down in history as the “Miracle of Sarajevo ”. The game was the first in the Olimpiski Stadium Koševo , which was badly damaged after the Bosnian War , and which was restored after the war and became the home of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football team. For Bosnia and Herzegovina it was the seventh official international match since it was founded a year earlier and the second game in its own country. For Sedlacek, who was 41 at the time, it was a coincidence to be able to direct this game; after he was recommended for the same game by the then UEFA delegate and former world class referee Erich Linemayr . The game in the completely sold out stadium, which was still surrounded by the largely destroyed city and the graves on its former training grounds, was won 2-1 against the Italians by hits from Hasan Salihamidžić and Elvir Bolić or Enrico Chiesa , which was the first Victory in the still young history of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football team.

In the 1997/98 season Sedlacek started with the management of the ÖFB Supercup between the reigning champions SV Wüstenrot Salzburg and the reigning cup winner SK Sturm Graz, which ended 1-0 in favor of Salzburg . During this season, in addition to numerous appearances in Austria, he also managed the 1997/98 UEFA Cup match between Club Brugge and Beitar Jerusalem (first round second leg). In 1998/99 he was in charge of the final of the ÖFB Cup 1998/99 between LASK and Sturm Graz , after having been a referee in the second round and in the semifinals , which was only won by the Grazers on penalties . He was also in charge of his first UEFA Champions League qualifying match that season , when he was in charge of the 0-0 game between Skonto Riga and Dinamo Minsk on July 22, 1998, showing five yellow cards in that game.

In the last two seasons before retiring from active service due to reaching the age limit of 45, Sedlacek was only active primarily in Austria and led games at various levels and in various competitions. On September 17, 2000 he was given the honor of leading a match in the Swiss Super League ; In the 3-0 victory of FC Lugano over FC Luzern , the now 45-year-old awarded two yellow and one red cards. In the domestic league he completed his last official game as a referee on December 2, 2000 in a 1-0 away win for SK Sturm Graz over SV Wüstenrot Salzburg. In addition to the international games shown here, he also directed numerous others, including at junior level.

Then Sedlacek took over the youth committee of the Vienna Football Association in 2001 and was subsequently appointed vice president of the association. After the departure of Kurt Ehrenberger , who had held the office of the Vienna Football Association President since 1990, Sedlacek was elected as the new association president at the extraordinary general meeting on February 20, 2010. After a five-year term of office, he was reaffirmed in this position at the Annual General Meeting on April 18, 2015. In addition to this position, Sedlacek also appears as the person in charge and head of the Austrian referees, as well as one of the vice-presidents of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB). He is also the chairman of the ÖFB Cup committee.
