Culture and sights

Place of pilgrimage

There is a Marian pilgrimage site in Rosenthal, which was looked after by Cistercians until December 2006 and again from November 2009 to January 2012 . There is a spring here whose water is said to have healing powers for the eyes. Several pilgrimages take place on the pilgrimage meadow every year, including those of the Dresden-Meißen diocese . Likewise, the nationwide student pilgrimage of the Working Group of Catholic University Communities Rosenthal has as its goal.

The miraculous image is a lime wood statue, created around 1480. Mary is shown with the child, a special feature is the pear that the baby Jesus holds in her hand. The first pilgrimages can be traced back to the first decades of the 16th century; After the church split , the place of pilgrimage contributed significantly to the preservation of the Catholic faith in the area. Rosenthal experienced rapid development from the second half of the 17th century. Pilgrims from Upper and Lower Lusatia , Saxony , Bohemia and also some Lutherans sought help from Our Lady of Rosenthal . Not only the eyes should be healed through the intercession of the Rosenthaler Madonna, but also sterility .

Father Xaverius Jacobus Ticinus SJ, a Sorbian Jesuit , wrote the history of the place of grace. A conflict broke out between the Marienstern Cistercian monastery and the Bautzen Cathedral Foundation over the spiritual care of the place ; a decision was made in favor of the Cistercian women in the 1730s. Then the pilgrimage was mainly looked after by the Cistercians from Ossegg and Neuzelle . The place of pilgrimage is now very popular with the Catholic Sorbs.

Others

At the south-eastern exit towards Räckelwitz there is a wayside shrine built in 1682 , which is the oldest of its kind in Catholic Upper Lusatia.

Rosenthal is on the traditional route of the Ralbitzer Easter rider procession to Wittichenau . In addition, the Krabat cycle path runs through the village.
