Red and Black (original title: Le Rouge et le Noir ) is an Italian - French film adaptation of the 1830 novel by Stendhal with Gérard Philipe and Danielle Darrieux from 1954.
action
Julien Sorel was on trial in France around 1830. He confesses to an attempted murder of his former lover Madame de Rénal and guiltily longs for his death sentence. While he waits for the verdict to be announced, he looks back on the events that prompted him to commit his act:
The intelligent Julien grew up in a simple family as the son of a carpenter. At a young age he developed a strong need for social advancement. First he wanted to become a clergyman, which is why he learned the Bible by heart and took lessons from the local priest, the Abbé Chélan. With his help he finally got a job as a tutor for the children of Monsieur de Rénal. He is very wealthy and also married to a beautiful woman. Driven by ambition, Julien seduces Madame de Rénal and hopes for new opportunities for advancement.
The maid Elisa, who is unhappily in love with Julien, discovers the affair between Julien and Madame de Rénal and informs the horned husband about it in an anonymous letter. When Madame de Rénal parted ways with him, Julien wanted to go to the seminary. Since this did not meet his expectations, however, he found a job in Paris as private secretary to the Marquis de la Mole, through which he gained access to the elegant salons of high society. This time it is Mathilde, the daughter of his employer, with whom he is dating. Although Julien is not a nobleman, the Marquis agrees that his daughter and Julien are married. He also holds out the prospect of a promising position as an officer for his future son-in-law.
However, when Madame de Rénal sends the Marquis a letter in which she explains Julien's true character as a calculating heartbreaker, the Marquis throws Julien out of his house. Knowing that it was Madame de Rénal who destroyed his lifelong dream, Julien swears vengeance. Back home, he shoots his former lover during the service. Since he refuses to confess after his arrest, he is visited in prison by Madame de Rénal, who has since recovered from her gunshot wound, and the Abbé Chélan - in an effort to bring him back to the lap of the church. Julien eventually realizes that Madame de Rénal is the only person who truly loved him. Full of guilt towards her, he decides to confess. Madame de Rénal dies three days after his execution.

Reviews
"Autant-Lara's film adaptation of the famous novel, set against the background of the dispute between the nobility and the church around 1830, has some craftsmanship qualities, but appears very academic," said the lexicon of international film . The "revolutionary [e] pathos" of the literary model was "consistently toned down to the thickly applied colors". Cinema described the film as an "elaborate novel adaptation". The evangelical film observer said that the adaptation distinguished itself “primarily through the modern realism of the description and psychological customization”.
