Rotenhan is part of the municipality of the Lower Franconian town of Ebern in the Haßberge district .

The village is located in the eastern part of the district in the Baunachgrund, to the left of the Baunach , at the western foot of an elongated ridge of the Haßberge. The ruins of Rotenhan Castle stand above the village . Ebern is about 2.5 kilometers to the south. The federal highway 279 from Fulda to Breitengüßbach passes westward.

history

The first mention of the place was in the year 804, when Riebald and Engelger donated goods in "Rotenhagen" to the Fulda monastery . 1233 followed the mention of "Ludwig de Rotenhage", the progenitor of the von Rotenhan family . Rotenhan was the hamlet of Felsenburg, the ancestral seat of the Rotenhan family, which was destroyed in 1324. The neighboring Eyrichshof Castle became the new headquarters of the family .

1862 was rural community Eyrichshof consisting of seven places, the parish village Eyrichshof, the three hamlets Rotenhan, seal field and short wind and the three wastes , paper mill Sachsenhof and specks in the newly created Bavarian district office boars incorporated. Rotenhan had 34 inhabitants in 1871. In 1900 the 573.75 hectare parish had 239 inhabitants, 230 of whom were Protestants and 8 were Catholics. In the Protestant Rotenhan, 31 people lived in 7 residential buildings. The responsible evangelical parish and denominational school was in the neighboring village of Eyrichshof, 0.5 kilometers away. In 1925, 45 people lived in 7 residential buildings in the hamlet.

In 1950 the hamlet of Rotenhan at that time had 69 inhabitants and 8 residential buildings. The Catholics belonged to the parish of Ebern. In 1970 there were 88 residents in the village and in 1987 219 residents as well as 58 residential buildings with 83 apartments. The increase in population is based on an area that previously belonged to Eyrichshof.

On July 1, 1971, Rotenhan and Eyrichshof were incorporated into Ebern. On July 1, 1972, as part of the regional reform, the district of Ebern was dissolved and Rotenhan became part of the Haßberg district.

The Protestant residents belong to the district of the parish Eyrichshof with parish seat in Fischbach, the Catholic to the district of the parish of St. Laurentius in Ebern.
