history

The castle was built by the knight Reiwein von Wartenfels and his two sons Heinrich and Friedrich between 1323 and 1327 with the consent of Bamberg's Bishop Heinrich II von Sternberg . In 1332 they received from Bishop Werntho von Bamberg the economic means to appoint a priest for their castle chapel . In the 15th century they received further ecclesiastical rights in Wartenfels. In 1421, an imperial freedom , which was valid until 1803 , is documented within a defined area around the castle . In 1444 the castle was razed by Nuremberg troops in the course of the Waldenfels feud and destroyed again in the Peasants' War in 1525 .

In 1575 Hans Adam von Waldenfels sold the castle with its farms and estates to Wolf Dietrich von Wiesenthau (councilor and court master in Bamberg ), who already two years later in 1577 sold the manor to the imperial knight Lorenz von Guttenberg . In 1621 it came into the possession of the Bamberg Monastery , which set up an office there. However, the castle buildings were left to decay by the bishopric. After secularization in 1803, the castle first came into the hands of the bourgeoisie in 1806 and then came into the possession of farmers, who removed the castle ruins by 1858 and used the building material to build the castle farmer's house to the west of it.

description

The castle site lies on an east-facing mountain spur, which is bordered on its south side by the Zettlitz valley, in the east and north-east by a side valley and in the north-west by a dry valley . The spur is only connected to the slightly rising plateau to the west, where a deep section trench carved out of the rock was dug . There is a berm on the north and east sides . The castle complex consisted of a slightly elevated core castle and a bailey on a lower plateau south of it. On the northeast corner are the few remains of a round tower .

The place is protected as ground monument number D-4-5734-0016: Medieval Burgstall Wartenfels .
