particularities

The Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500, GT-I9505, GT-i9506 and GT-I9515) is a smartphone that was presented by the manufacturer Samsung on March 14, 2013 in New York . Compared to the previous model, the Samsung Galaxy S III , it has new software features, a larger screen and a 13-megapixel camera, as well as numerous improvements in hardware performance. The smartphone has been available in Germany since April 27, 2013. By May 23, 2013, more than ten million devices had been sold worldwide, and 40 million by October 24, 2013.

On February 24, 2014, the successor model Galaxy S5 was presented at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona . The end of sales for the Samsung Galaxy S4 was February 25, 2016. Since that day, Samsung no longer offers the S4 on its own website.

Specifications

design

The design of the Galaxy S4 looks similar to its predecessor, with the proportions changed and the side curves straightened out. The frame above and below the screen is the same on the Galaxy S4. The edge of the housing next to the screen has also been changed and is around 30 percent smaller than its predecessor. The proportion of the screen in the total surface of the device is 72.1%. The surface pattern has also been slightly adjusted. The housing is still made of plastic ( polycarbonate ). The distance between the screen and the home button is almost completely eliminated; the home button now has a horizontal axis of symmetry and has become larger.

It is available in the colors white ("white frost"), black ("black mist"), deep black ("deep-black"), blue ("blue"), red ("red") and violet ("purple") LTE + only) available. Samsung announced on September 26, 2013 that it would bring two gold-colored models onto the market. Thanks to the removable plastic cover, among other things, the S4 is the first TCO-certified smartphone.

hardware

screen

The smartphone has a five-inch Super AMOLED screen (RG RGB - PenTile matrix) with Full HD - resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels, 1080p). This results in a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch ( ppi ).

service

In addition to the touchscreen, the Galaxy S4 is operated using the volume buttons, the on / off button, the home button and the two capacitive buttons on the left and right of it. The two capacitive navigation buttons next to the home button are backlit , as is the case with all Galaxy S and Note devices except for the first Galaxy S.

processor

The Galaxy S4 is delivered with different processor equipment depending on the region. There are two eight-core variants available with a 1.6 GHz Exynos processor from Samsung and two four-core variants with a Qualcomm processor with 1.9 GHz clock frequency ( Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T) and a Qualcomm processor with 2.3 GHz clock frequency ( Snapdragon 800 ), whereby the Snapdragon 800 version of the S4 also supports LTE Advanced. The S4 is currently available in Germany with the Snapdragon S600 processor and under the name “Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE +” ﴾GT-i9506﴿ also with the Snapdragon 800 processor known from the Note 3 N9005 .

camera

The main camera consists of a 1 / 3.06 inch (8.3 mm) active pixel sensor of the type IMX135 (GT-i9500) or IMX091PQ (GT-i9505 / 9515) from Sony , and has a resolution of 13 megapixels (4128 × 3096). The aperture of the main camera is ƒ / 2.2.

The device films in 1080p (Full HD) at 30 frames per second and slow motion videos with 450p at 120 frames per second, the latter without a soundtrack.

During video recording in 1080p, still images can be recorded with 9.6 megapixels (4128 × 2322 pixels).

The indoor camera has a resolution of 2.1 megapixels and can film in the same resolution (1080p).

Further equipment

Equipped with an infrared transmitter, the Galaxy S4 can be used as a universal remote control for media devices such as DVD players or televisions. Compared to the Galaxy S3 , no special FM radio chip was installed.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S4 is the only mobile phone in the Samsung Galaxy S series to have sensors for measuring temperatures ( thermometer ) and humidity ( hygrometer ).

software

operating system

Android (4.2.2 "Jelly Bean") runs on the smartphone with Samsung's own TouchWiz user interface - "Nature UX". Since mid-March 2015, Samsung has been delivering the new Android version Android (5.0.1 "Lollipop") for the Galaxy S4 via Kies and an over-the-air update (OTA).

service

In addition to a new software design, Samsung is adding new functions and apps to the existing Android. A video is automatically paused when the user looks away from the screen . You can also scroll the screen in the web browser with a swipe of your hand.

With the new " Air View " gesture control , the device can be controlled a few millimeters above the screen with the finger. For example, a preview of the video content can be shown using the progress bar in the video playback program.

Camera application

In the camera app , videos and photos can be recorded simultaneously with the front and main cameras, but in the same video track instead of creating 2 different tracks in the same video file, which means that a small window of the other camera is a small section of the Field of view covered. Series pictures are possible in full resolution, but limited to 20 pictures in each selectable resolution.

During video recording in 1080p , still images can be recorded with a resolution of 9.6 megapixels.

Support for CyanogenMod

The developer group "TeamHacksung", which has already ported the alternative firmware CyanogenMod to many Samsung smartphones in the past , initially announced that they would not provide any alternative firmware for the Galaxy S4, as the necessary information such as drivers and source code would be obtained of the kernel is proving too cumbersome. In addition, according to their statements, Samsung has proven to be uncooperative in the past when it comes to supporting the developer community. A few weeks later, however, there were increasing indications that a port was still being worked on. A first stable version was finally released in November 2013.

In certain cases, users of the Galaxy S4 were given 48 GB of additional storage space free of charge from Dropbox for up to two years.

variants

The individual variants of the S4 can be differentiated using the model numbers. Some variants can also be identified by adding names.

GT-i9500

The basic version GT-I9500 has an octa-core 1.6 GHz processor and UMTS capabilities, but not LTE.

GT-i9505 and i9515

The GT-I9505 and the “Value Edition” GT-I9515 have a quad-core 1.9 GHz Snapdragon S600 processor and an LTE module.

GT-i9506 LTE + / LTE-A

The GT-I9506 model is also LTE Advanced capable and has the Snapdragon 800 quad-core, which achieves a higher system performance of 2.3 GHz. Like the Galaxy Note 3, it supports the LTE CAT4 cellular standard and was initially only available in South Korea. It has been sold in Germany since the beginning of December 2013 - exclusively by the network operators T-Mobile and Vodafone. The GT-i9506 variant came on the market with Android 4.3. Updates to Android 4.4.2 KitKat and Android 5.0.1 Lollipop are available.

Despite the Snapdragon 800, the standard camera app cannot record 4K videos like the Note 3, although the Note 3 and S4 have identical camera lenses and image sensors. The 1080p @ 60fps recording function is also omitted, but slow motion videos with 120 fps can be recorded with the GT-i9506 as with the Note 3 in 720p HD resolution with 1280 × 720 pixels, while the normal S4 GT-i9505 and GT-i9515 with 800 × 450 pixels.

Google Play Edition

On May 15, 2013, the “Google Play Edition” (GT-I9505G) of the S4 was presented at Google I / O 2013, which is delivered with the normal Android 4.2 surface and without any locks instead of Samsung's TouchWiz surface. The Android versions 4.3 and 4.4 were released for this version shortly after their introduction. The Google S4 was sold on the Google Play website , where it was initially only available in the US with 16GB of storage from June 26th. Technically, it corresponds to the GT-I9505 (Qualcomm LTE) model.

S4 mini

The “Galaxy S4 Mini” and the following two models were presented at a press event in London on June 20, 2013. The Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-I9195 and GT-I9195I; for the USA also as Duos GT-I9192) is the smaller 4.3 "version of the S4 and is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S III mini . Also in the other performance data there are differences to the standard model.

S4 Active

The "Galaxy S4 Active" (GT-i9295) is the dustproof and shockproof variant of the S4 ( IP67 ) that is protected against temporary submersion and is around 33 g heavier and slightly larger in all dimensions. However, like the S4 Mini, the display is only protected by Gorilla Glass 2, while all other variants have the third generation Gorilla Glass. The menu and back buttons are mechanical buttons. Furthermore, instead of the AMOLED , a TFT display with identical resolution is installed. The camera has a lower resolution than the standard model (13 MP ) with 8 MP. The front camera has the same specifications as the standard model (GT-i9505, i9506 and i9515) and the Galaxy S5 and also Note 3 .

S4 zoom

Compared to the standard model, the “Galaxy S4 Zoom” (SM-C101) has a higher camera resolution of 16 MP and an optical wide-angle 10x zoom lens with a small image equivalent focal length of 24 mm to approx. 240 mm. The device also has a xenon flash and an optical image stabilizer. The camera application has been supplemented with additional functions and recording modes. In addition, the 1 / 2.33-inch sensor is larger than the 1/3-inch sensor on the S4 and Galaxy Note 3 . Therefore, the individual pixels of the sensor have a larger area. However, this model has a weaker processor (Pega-Dual + XMM6262, 1.5 GHz dual core) with 1.54 GB of RAM and a smaller screen with 4.3 inches and 960 × 540 pixels (qHD) and a pixel density from 256 ppi. The working memory capacity, display size, resolution and pixel density are identical to the Galaxy S4 Mini.

In addition to 1080p at 30 frames per second, it can also film in 720p with 60 frames per second.

S4 Value Edition

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition GT-I9515 VE is a technically almost identical variant of the Galaxy S4 GT-I9505. However, it is already delivered ex works with Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Another special feature is the black version with a back made of imitation leather and the silver version with a metal look.

equipment

Samsung Galaxy S4 with black "S-View" cover

Together with the Galaxy S4, special accessories for the smartphone were also presented. Certain apps should allow these devices to interact with the phone and make everyday life easier for the user. This is also under the principle of the motto "Life Companion". Accessories presented were scales that can also measure body fat, a bracelet with various sensors and a step counter (“S-band”) and a heart rate or pulse monitor . In addition, a special gamepad for controlling games has been released. The mobile phone is attached to the gamepad in a special holder. These devices communicate with the smartphone using Bluetooth.

In addition, various covers from Samsung have been announced: There will be a “protective cover” in different colors made of polycarbonate, a “flip cover” with a hinged cover, a pouch, a cover for wireless charging of the battery according to the Qi standard and a so-called "S-View" cover with a recess in the upper area of the display for notifications.
