Saran is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2641 km². The administrative seat is the city of Chhapra .

The population is 3,951,862 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.64% and was therefore very high. Saran has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district has a literacy rate of 65.96% in 2011, an increase of almost 14 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 90% of the population are Hindus and around 10% are Muslims . The Bhojpuri language is common in the district.

Only 8.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city was Chhapra with 193,193 inhabitants.
