The black ridge between Eschachthal in the Bavarian district of Oberallgäu and Bolsternang in the Baden-Württemberg district of Ravensburg is 1118.5  m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain in the district of Ravensburg, in the administrative district of Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg) and in the Adelegg mountain range , in whose landscape of the same name it is surpassed by the Ursersberg ( 1129  m ). The observation tower Schwarzer-Grat-Turm stands on the mountain .

geography

location

In the extreme southeast of Baden-Württemberg, the Black Ridge belongs to the small Adelegg mountain range , which extends a little north of the Allgäu Alps far into the northern Alpine foothills . The border with Bavaria and the Oberallgäu district runs almost 300 m southeast of the mountain summit. The summit rises 1.8 km south-southwest of Eschachthal , a district of the Bavarian community of Weitnau , and 2.3 km (as the crow flies ) north-northeast of Bolsternang , a district of the Württemberg community of Isny im Allgäu .

Around 950 m south-southeast of the summit of the Black Ridge rises the summit of the Raggenhorn ( 1056.2  m ) on the national border ; beyond that is the Weitnau district of Wengen (Bavaria). The Wenger Eggalm (also called Wengener Egg Alpe or Alpe Wenger Egg ) is located southeast of the Black Ridge, also on the slope of the Raggenhorn .

To the east the landscape falls black ridge to the small Rotenbach off a southwestern tributary of the north of the mountain flowing Eschach , into which the swelling on the southwestern flank and after Eisenbacher Tobel flowing around to the north Eisenbach flows. On the southern flank of the mountain, the small Scheidach rises as a north-eastern tributary of the Wengener Argen in the catchment area of the Lower Argen .

Natural allocation

The Black Ridge belongs within the foothills of the Alps in the natural spatial main unit group Nagelfluhhöhen and Senken between Lake Constance and Isar (No. 02) and in the main unit Adelegg (023) to the subunit Hohe (Südliche) Adelegg (023.0).

Highest mountain in Württemberg

The Black Ridge was the highest mountain in the former state of Württemberg . But that does not mean that its summit was also its highest point. This was namely the Dreifürstenstein ( 1154  m ), which is located on the southeast flank of the Hornisgrinde mountain in Baden ( 1164.4  m ) and on the border between the Württemberg community of Baiersbronn and Sasbachwalden .

Protected areas

Parts of the Adelegg landscape protection area and the associated tertiary foreland ( CDDA no. 319441; designated in 1994; 65.2  km² in size) and those of the Adelegg bird sanctuary (VSG no. 8226-441; 28.61 ) extend over the Württemberg areas of the Black Ridge km²). In the Eisenbachtal area, parts of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Adelegg (FFH no. 8326-341; 6.4 km²) extend up to the slopes of the mountain .

Black Ridge Tower

A viewing pavilion was built on the summit of the Black Ridge in 1878, which was replaced by a wooden viewing tower in 1906 by the Swabian Alb Association . This in turn was followed in 1971 by today's Schwarzer Grat Tower , a 28.5 m high observation tower.

In the summer months, drinks and simple meals are available at the tower on Sundays. When the visibility is good, you can see the Allgäu Alps , large parts of Upper Swabia and Lake Constance from its viewing platform .

When visibility is very good, the view extends to distant mountains such as the Tödi (3614 m / 134 km), the Schreckhorn (4078 m / 196 km), the Titlis (3328 m / 164 km), Uri Rotstock (2928 m / 152 km) ), the Rigi (1798 m / 143 km), to the Pilatus (2128 m / 163 km), and to the 160 km away Feldberg in the Black Forest. Even the peaks of the Jungfrau and the Mönch, which are over 200 km away, can be seen when visibility is extremely good.

Transmitter location

At the beginning of the 1980s, due to its optimal height, the Black Ridge was planned by the then Südwestfunk (SWF) for broadcasting coverage in the Allgäu, Upper Swabia and Lake Constance regions. The reason was numerous interference with reception, caused by the inadequate range of the Waldburg transmitter . The planned 150 m high steel grid transmission mast could not be realized in 1984 for nature conservation reasons, along with many objections from politics and the population . Another location had to be found for the frequencies with 50 kW for the Black Ridge, which were previously coordinated internationally by the SWF. However, since no suitable locations were found in Baden-Württemberg for years, two frequencies (98.7 and 103.0 MHz) were re-coordinated on the Grünten (1738 m) to Bavaria in the summer of 1989 - with a weaker and directional power of 30 kW. Since then, the two radio programs SWR1 (formerly SWF1 ) and SWR3 (formerly SWF3 ) have been broadcast from there. The other two programs remained at the old Waldburg location, as the frequencies intended for them cannot be used at the much more extensive Grünten location due to feared interference with other programs.

After an interim solution, the 105.0 MHz frequency planned for Radio 7 on the Black Ridge was able to reach the ultimate transmitter Iberger Kugel (1013 m) - only 7 km southwest of the Black Ridge - at the Höchst (883 m) near Illmensee with only 320 watts of power - be re-coordinated with full 50 kW power.

Transport, hiking and events

Sign HW 9

North past the Schwarzen Grat and Raggenhorn, the Bavarian district road  OA 20 leads between the Buchenberg districts of Eschach and Eschachthal , which merges into the K 8045 on the Württemberg side. The Bavarian State Road  2055 runs south past between the Weitnau districts of Wengen and Nellenberg . From this, the Württemberg K 8019 branches off at the state border, which leads as a spur road to Bolsternang , located south-south-west below the Black Ridge .

Various hiking trails lead to the Black Ridge. An ascent is possible from the nearby villages of Eschachthal, Bolsternang and Wengen, but also from further away, such as Rohrdorf and Großholzleute (west of Adelegg) and Kreuzthal (on the Eschach). The mountain can, for example, also be hiked from the direction of the Eschacher Weiher , which is close to the OA 20 ( Eschacher Weiher car park ). The climbs lead on marked hiking trails, mostly gravel paths, to the summit and - provided you have good footwear - are generally unproblematic to walk on.

Two main hiking trails of the Swabian Alb Association lead over the Black Ridge:

Every year in June there is a mountain run to the summit, organized by TV Isny .
