Czerniki (German Schwarzstein ) is a village in Poland in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the rural municipality of Kętrzyn .

Geographical location

To the east of the village, about two kilometers away, are the lakes Mój and Sieroz .

history

The village was laid out in 1394 according to Kulm law . In the 14th century the settlement had an area of ​​41 Hufen . In addition, there was already a tavern and a mill was built in 1394. Also at the end of the 14th century, the church that still exists today was built. After the end of the Second World War , the place was first renamed Czarny Kamień (literal translation of the German name) and from 1946 in Czerniki. In 1945 a primary school opened in the village and the village became the seat of a municipality. Through an administrative reform, the village came to the newly formed Olsztyn Voivodeship in 1975 . After its dissolution, Czerniki was part of the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship from 1999.

In 1785 there were 31 buildings in the village, in 1818 there were 34 residential buildings. In 1890 30 Poles lived in the place.

Legend

The legend about the origin of the name says that a church was built in the village at the beginning of the settlement. However, not far from the settlement lived the devil, for whom this was a thorn in the side. So he decided to throw a large black stone at the church. While the devil was on the way to the church with the stone, suddenly the cry of a rooster rang out, whereupon the devil fled and left the stone. Hence the place got its name Schwarzstein . In fact, there is a black stone about three meters in circumference in the nearby forest. This was transported there during the Ice Age .

The church was built at the end of the 14th century and is located on a small hill. In 1749/1750 and 1771/1772 the church was renewed and in 1885/1886. A sacristy and vestibule were added at the end of the 19th century. In 1990 the church was renovated, and another in 2009.

Schulzenamt

In addition to Czerniki itself, the Schulzenamt includes the villages of Gierłoż , Góry , Rybniki and Strzyże .

Only a small country road leads through the village, which joins the provincial road 592 about two kilometers southwest and thus connects the village with Kętrzyn, about three kilometers away. In an easterly direction, the road leads to Gierłoż, which is about four kilometers away.

Cerniki is a train station on the Kętrzyn – Węgorzewo railway line , which is still used for tourism today .

The nearest international airport is Szczytno-Szymany Airport , which only offers regular seasonal services. The Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdansk and the Frédéric Chopin Airport in Warsaw , both around 200 kilometers to the east and south-east, offer regular scheduled flights .
