history

A Skymark Boeing 767-300, which has since been retired, in March 2005

Skymark was founded on November 12, 1996 and started operations on September 19, 1998.

In 2003 the company went bankrupt and was bought by Shinichi Nishikubo, who made it the third largest airline in Japan.

On February 17, 2011, Skymark became the first Japanese airline to sign a binding agreement to purchase four Airbus A380-800s plus two more as options. The option was redeemed for the Paris Air Show 2011 , Skymark should now receive six A380s. In July 2014, however, it was announced that Skymark would cancel the A380 order for economic reasons. The first A380 planned for the company was already partially painted and equipped and was scheduled for delivery in autumn 2014. There was a risk of a penalty of up to half a billion euros, which would have brought Skymark into bankruptcy . In October 2014, Airbus and Skymark agreed on a contractual penalty in the amount of the advance payment of 182 million euros already made . The prefabricated A380s were delivered to Emirates .

The two almost completed Airbus A380s for Skymark, parked at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (2015)

On January 28, 2015 Skymark went bankrupt again, the previous boss Shinichi Nishikubo resigned from his post and was replaced by the previous CFO Masakazu Arimori. A strong yen , the high oil price up to the end of 2014 and new competition let the debt grow to 530 million euros . Flight operations remained upright and the financial investor Integral Corporation introduced new capital available, while Skymark bankruptcy protection enjoys. For cost reasons, Skymark has been operating a pure Boeing 737 fleet since February 2015 and has therefore terminated leasing contracts for its Airbus A330s .

On August 5, 2015, the creditors voted for a partnership with ANA Holdings , the parent company of All Nippon Airways , and thus against the proposal of the largest creditor Intrepid Aviation, which envisaged a partnership with Delta Air Lines .

On September 29, 2015, the board was newly appointed. The previous CEO Masakazu Arimori was replaced by Masahiko Ichie, who previously worked for the Development Bank of Japan , which is indirectly involved in Skymark through the shareholder "UDS Airlines Investment". In addition, Nobuo Sayama, former CEO of the largest shareholder “Integral Corporation”, has been appointed chairman of the board. A codeshare agreement with All Nippon Airways was also announced.

On March 28, 2016, Skymark announced that it had averted bankruptcy after successful restructuring. The airline was targeting annual sales of 7 billion yen by fiscal year 2018 and launching international routes. Regular international flight operations with a daily connection from Tokyo-Narita to Saipan began on November 29, 2019 .
