The Catholic parish church of St. Gordian and St. Epimachus in Stöttwang , a municipality in the Ostallgäu district in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , was built in the middle of the 18th century in the Rococo style. Due to its extensive equipment, it is also known as the "little Wies ". The church is dedicated to the martyrs Gordianus and Epimachus and belongs to the diocese of Augsburg .

history

The church goes back to an own monastery founded in the 8th century with a chapel consecrated to Mary , which was subordinate to the emperor. In the year 831 Ludwig the Pious , the son and successor of Charlemagne , gave the monastery to the Benedictine abbey in Kempten , which exercised the right of patronage in the parish of Stöttwang until secularization . The Kempten monastery had a larger church built on the site of the former Marienkapelle, which was consecrated to Gordianus and Epimachus in the Middle Ages. The relics of the two patron saints are venerated in Kempten. The current church was built in 1744/45 under the pastor Johann Martin Klein and consecrated in 1746 by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Johann Jakob von Mayr.

architecture

Exterior construction

The outer walls of the church are structured by painted pilasters , the windows are bordered in red-violet and decorated with false cornices. In the northeast of the nave rises the square bell tower, the pyramid roof of which is covered with green glazed tiles. The two basement floors of the tower date from the 14th / 15th centuries. Century, the upper floor was rebuilt in its present form in 1768 after a lightning strike. The tower is framed by corner pilasters , and glare fields with round arch friezes are cut into the walls . Arched windows open on all floors, the top floor is broken through on three sides by twin arcades .

Pilasters with stucco capital

The plan of the church is a Latin cross . The interior, a lighted by tall windows hall building is a barely protruding from the wall pilasters with elaborate stucco capitals and profiled beams are decorated in five axes divided. In the east of the nave , a chapel with oval pendentive domes is built on to the right and left . The strongly drawn-in, two-bay choir , which is closed on three sides on the outside, is closed in a semicircle on the inside. The nave and choir are covered by flat needle cap barrels. A double gallery with multiple curved parapets forms the western end of the nave .

Piece

The stucco decor was created in 1745 by Franz Xaver Feuchtmayer the Elder.

Frescoes

Dummy dome

The frescoes were executed in 1745 by Franz Georg Hermann and his son Franz Ludwig . The choir fresco depicts the beheading of St. Gordianus and his transfiguration. The western ceiling fresco of the nave is dedicated to the transfiguration of St. Epimachus. In the eastern part, a column-supported dome with a coffered ceiling and lantern is simulated. At the foot of the dome is a balcony on which the builder of the church, Pastor Johann Martin Klein, can be seen as a preacher, including the Archangel Michael with the flaming sword, angel and coat of arms and the inscription "Mater, Deo ConseCrata eXaLtatVr". The capital letters result in a chronogram with the year MDCCXLV (1745). The smaller medallions are made in grisaille technique and depict apostles and church fathers. Above the organ gallery you can see King David with the harp, Saint Cecilia at the organ and the prophet Jeremias with a lute.

On the dome frescoes of the two side chapels, Jesus with the cross and Mary as intercessor are depicted on the right and the rehearsal on the cross in the presence of St. Helena on the left . The fresco is reminiscent of a brotherhood of the Holy Cross that formerly existed in Stöttwang.

The frescoes on the upper gallery parapet show angels playing music, the frescoes on the lower parapet show allegorical depictions of the cardinal virtues of wisdom (with mirror), justice (with sword and scales), moderation (with bridle and unicorn ), strength (with lance and shield), in the middle a personification of the church (with Pope's cross , key, papal crown and chalice). The bottom of the lower gallery is dedicated to the divine virtues of faith (with cross), hope (with anchor) and love (mother with children).
