The Catholic parish church of St. Marien von Bad Rodach at Lempertshäuser Straße 13 belongs to the Coburg deanery of the Archdiocese of Bamberg . It is a listed building .

history

Around 1120, Bishop Otto von Bamberg founded a monastery and chapel on the Georgenberg near Rodach , which belonged to the Benedictine order . However, the monastic settlement was not granted any upswing, so that Bishop Otto gave it to the Premonstratensian monastery Veßra in 1135 , which set up a monastery there, which was headed by a provost .

In 1526, Elector Johann the Steadfast converted to Protestantism, and in 1529 he introduced the complete Reformation in the Electorate of Saxony . Only the provost on the Georgenberg held on to the old faith until finally in 1541 the abbot of Veßra was ordered to withdraw the provost on the Georgenberg.

On December 27, 1925, the first Holy Mass since the Reformation was celebrated in Rodach . The place of worship was the house of the Schneider family at Rückertstraße 9. Since 1929, the mass took place in a room of the former local court at Schlossplatz 1. The few Catholics received pastoral care from a chaplain from the parish of St. Augustin in Coburg . In the course of the resettlements during the Second World War , numerous mostly Catholic Germans came to Rodach, who were followed by other Catholics, mainly refugees and displaced persons . The room in the district court was no longer sufficient for the service, so in 1943 the Evangelical Church of Salvator was made available.

The call for a separate Catholic church was loud. Josef Rauschen from Coburg created the design in 1953. Today's church property was purchased on September 22, 1954. The foundation stone was laid on June 10, 1956 and the topping-out ceremony in November 1956 . In February 1957 the rectory was already occupied. The church was consecrated on 2/3 November 1957. She received the patronage of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven . During the consecration, relics of the martyrs Clement of Rome and Faustus and the virgin Amanda were enclosed in the altar . On May 1, 1964, the previous branch church of St. Augustin was raised to an independent parish. The pastoral care area extends to Rodach and 28 villages. For financial reasons, the parishes of St. Marien in Rodach and St. Marien in Coburg have been merged into a parish association since mid-2006. They are looked after together by a clergyman.

Church building

The building owner was the Catholic Church Foundation St. Augustin in Coburg. The construction work was also in the hands of the architect Josef Rauschen .

Exterior of the church

The church is a simple hall church . Above the portal is a 7.50 m high and 6 m wide window , which is divided by six bars and drawn up to the roof . The gable of the low gable roof is crowned by a 3 m high cross. A staircase arranged in a semicircle leads to the entrance of the church with eight steps . The gilded four evangelist symbols are placed above the two doors . To the left of the church is the 33 m high, unadorned campanile , which was completed in July 1962. The tower clock is a gift from the town of Rodach. In the bell room hang three bells that were cast in April 1962 in the bell foundry Rudolf Perner .

Interior of the church

In the pews 460 sleeps. The dais with the altar is raised by three steps. The nave forms a trapezoid in plan , the base of which and the opposite side are designed as a circular arc . The gray marble table with the tabernacle originally stood directly by the window of the apse . A pulpit was dispensed with in favor of an ambo. In 1977, according to the new liturgical provisions, the altar was brought forward to the people and forms a popular altar . The tabernacle was placed on a patinated bronze stele . The chancel is determined by a glass window based on a design by the Coburg art teacher Hugo Hussla, made by the Coburg glass painter Adalbert Bringmann. The statue of a protective mantle Madonna made of linden wood and 14 Stations of the Cross made of holm oak are part of the artistic furnishings of the church . In 1965 the church received an electronic organ . This was converted in 1983 in such a way that it gives the impression of a mechanical organ positive .
