The St. Mary's County is a county in the US state of Maryland . The county seat is Leonardtown .
geography
The county is located at the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay . The mouth of the Potomac also forms the border with Virginia . Saint Mary's County covers an area of 1,582 square kilometers; of which 734 square kilometers are water surfaces. It is mostly surrounded by water and borders the following counties:

Saint Mary's County was formed as the first county in Maryland in 1637. It was named after Mary, the mother of Jesus . The first county seat was St. Marys City , one of the first permanent English settlements in North America and a port for the only Catholic colony.
Three sites in Saint Mary's County have National Historic Landmark status due to their historical significance , St. Mary's City Historic District , Sotterley Plantation House and West St. Mary's Manor Church . A total of 31 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 14, 2017).

25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 64.4 percent were between 18 and 64 and 10.1 percent were 65 years or older. 50.2 percent of the population was female.
