The Catholic church building St. Silvester is the former parish church of no more independent parish St. Silvester in alder , a village in the district of Borken in Westmünsterland . The three-aisled church building was built in the neo-Gothic style mainly from field fire bricks and sandstone . In its current state, the spire is covered with black slate and the nave and the choir with red roof tiles.

history

A smaller church building, the so-called “Little Church”, stood at the same location until it was demolished. However, it became too small for the increasing population in the middle of the 19th century, so that in 1864 the pastor Anton Nonhoff decided to have a new, larger church built. To this end, in 1865 he turned to the Münster architect and diocesan master builder Hilger Hertel the Elder , who planned the new building and prepared a cost estimate for 13,800 thalers . The new building was financed by a collection recommendation from the then Münster Bishop Johann Georg Müller and donations from the population, a collection recommendation by the then Köngl. Government in Düsseldorf for the administrative district of Düsseldorf and through an auction of building materials from the demolition of the old church.

On August 10, 1875, the demolition of the small church began. For a while, the services took place in an emergency church , which consisted of a barn that was sold in 1874 by Count Ferdinand von Merveldt to the Erler parish. On October 8, 1875, the foundations for the tower were laid. Since the brick trade had existed for a long time due to the geological conditions in Alder , the majority of the bricks required for the new building were manufactured and fired in Alder itself. On October 14, 1877, the erection of the roof structure of the nave began. The shell and the roofing of the nave and the side-mounted sacristy were completed in October 1879. At this point the tower had reached the height of the roof ridge of the ship. The interior work and the installation of the windows began in November 1879 and lasted until December 1879.

On December 3, 1879, the last mass was read in the emergency church and the altar was then transferred directly to the new church. The bishop Johannes Bernhard Brinkmann was exiled because of the Kulturkampf , so that the dean Magnus Bröring from Dorsten had to carry out the benediction of the new church on December 4th, 1879 with special power of attorney .

At the end of April 1880 the construction of the church tower began and at the end of September 1880 the construction of the roof structure began, on October 16 the tower ball , the iron cross and the gilded cock were attached and the entire tower was then completed in April 1881.

On October 19, 1887, the church was finally consecrated by the Münster auxiliary bishop Franz Wilhelm Cramer . The interior decoration was continued over the years through donations from the population, the local nobility and the local economy.

The 1792 by the bell-founder . Gebr Petit bell cast "Big Bell" and in 1851 by the bell foundry Gebr. Edelbrock bell cast "Salve Regina" had in 1917 just before the end of the First World War as a metal donation be abgebeben. Only the “New Year's Eve bell”, cast in 1651 by the bell founder Johannes Formica, was allowed to remain in the tower. In order to finance the new bells after the war, the "New Year's Eve bell" had to be sold. In 1923 the three new bells, the "New Year's Eve bell", the "Mother of God bell" and the "Guardian angel bell", all three cast by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher , were installed. The new "New Year's Eve bell" and the "Mother of God bell" had to be removed as a metal donation in World War II as early as 1942 . The "New Year's Eve bell" was lost in the war-related destruction of the church during Operation Varsity .

In 1903 a new tower clock was purchased. 1928/1929: Renovation of the church and the church tower. A cellar was built under the sacristy and the church was heated for the first time by warm air heating in winter. The gallery was enlarged in 1931 and the organ was rebuilt.

Since 1945

Largely unscathed by the war, Erle was severely damaged by Allied air raids on March 23, 1945 in preparation for Operation Varsity . In the church tower there was a radio and observation post of the Wehrmacht . In the morning the church was largely destroyed by incendiary and high explosive bombs . The tower caught fire and collapsed on the nave, the vault could not contain the rubble and collapsed as well.

As early as 1948, the reconstruction began in a simplified form by the Erler population. For the transition period an emergency church, consisting of former military barracks and a former barn, was built again. After five years of construction, the rebuilt church was consecrated on October 15, 1950 by the Münster bishop Heinrich Rolfe .

The consequences of the war could be seen in the church building for a long time. The facade was littered with clearly visible repairs and the formerly 65 meter high, neo-Gothic tower was replaced by a lower tower with a blunt, red-tiled tent roof, the neo-Gothic appearance of the old tower was completely lost. The vaults destroyed by the war were replaced by a flat acoustic ceiling and the interior of the church was painted uniformly white and light gray.

On May 9, 1951, the church received its three new bells, cast in the Bochum cast steelworks . Following tradition, they were again called "New Year's Eve bell", "Mother of God bell" and "Guardian angel bell". The new organ with 20 registers was inaugurated on July 12, 1953, and construction of the new sacristy began in 1964.

The redesign and modernization of the interior of the church began in June 1970 based on designs by Prof. Manfred Ludes . The new choir was set up at Easter 1971 . The altar, ambo and the cross with tabernacle as well as the eternal light were designed by the sculptor Hermann Kunkler . In 1983 the old wooden floor of the church was replaced with tiles, in 1985 the roof of the nave was renovated and the roof tiles on the butt tent roof of the tower were replaced with copper cladding. The organ stage was renovated and expanded in 1987 and the color scheme of the interior, which was kept in white and light gray throughout, was replaced by the color design that still exists today. a. the window reveals were framed in color, the columns and arches were given muted, earthy colors, as did the choir walls. The white acoustic ceilings have also been redesigned and colored. In 1988 the tower and the nave received new stained glass windows and the large chandelier and various other ironworks were installed. The Stations of the Cross paintings were restored to their old wooden frames, and the historic central aisle in the main nave was restored. In 1991 the organ stage was expanded again and a new organ was installed.

Between 1998 and 2000 the outside of the church was also renovated and the church tower was rebuilt based on the neo-Gothic tower that was destroyed in the war. The blunt spire of the post-war years was replaced by a high, pointed spire with black slate roofing. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on June 20, 1998, the inauguration on November 29, 1998. In the tower ball a document from 1949 was found, in which the destruction of the church and the reconstruction was described. The renovation was largely financed by the Erler population.

St. Silvester is a village church of brick and Polygonalchorkirche type P2 with a tower, a three-aisled nave , a choir and a sacristy . The building is oriented west-east with the tower in the west. The church is about 37 meters long, 20 meters wide and the tower is about 65 meters high. Since the two side aisles and the central nave are the same height, St. New Year's Eve is also a hall church .

The church was built from red field bricks, the foundations and special stones (end stones of the buttresses , frames and tracery of the windows and doors as well as the cornices ) are made of sandstone and tuff stone . In its current form, the saddle roof of the nave and the choir is covered with red roof tiles, the octagonal tower spire, the helmet over the stairwell attached to the church tower and the four side towers are covered with slate. A sandstone statue of the Holy Pope Silvester is embedded in the facade under the eaves of the choir room. Today's sacristy stands out clearly from the church in terms of architecture, it was added to the church in 1964 as a series of small gable roof structures. St. New Year's Eve can be entered through a wooden portal on the south side and a metal portal on the west side as well as through a wooden door on the north side, the sacristy has a separate, non-public entrance. The tower has an illuminated, analog tower clock on all four sides , which is embedded above the wooden sound flaps.

The nave is made up of three naves of equal height. The vaulted ceiling destroyed in the war was not rebuilt, the ceilings of the two side aisles were made as flat ceilings , those of the main aisle from 1987 onwards from three-dimensional geometrically arranged triangles. The main nave is framed on both sides by two rows of round columns (with an octagonal base and simple capitals ) on which Gothic arcades rest. On the west side of the tower there is a gallery protruding into the central nave , on this the console of the church organ and the seats for the church choir are housed. The gallery is accessed via the staircase attached to the outside of the tower . The choir, located at the eastern end, is elevated towards the nave on a marble gallery that is accessed via several steps. On this gallery stands the altar, the ambo, the cross with the tabernacle and the eternal light, designed in a modern style in metal and concrete by Herman Kunkler . The choir has direct access to the sacristy. The baptismal font is in the south aisle, the Marian altar in the north. The outer walls of the nave, the choir and the tower are provided with Gothic windows, colored windows with tracery made of sandstone. Between the windows of the nave there are paintings of the Way of the Cross and wrought-iron candlesticks. A large, also wrought-iron chandelier hangs in front of the choir. The wooden confessional is in the north aisle.
