The stadium Za Lužánkami ( German stadium behind Lužánky ) is a football stadium in the Královo Pole district of the second largest Czech city of Brno ( Brno in Czech ), Moravia . It takes its name from the nearby, largest (20 ha ) and oldest (1786) landscape park in the city called Lužánky . Until 2001 the football club FC Zbrojovka Brno played its home games here. It used to have an athletics facility . The Botanical Garden and Arboretum of the Mendel University are located in the east, right next to the stadium .
history
The Za Lužánkami stadium was built between 1949 and 1953 and could hold up to 50,000 spectators. It was the largest Czech stadium in regular league play. In 2001 Zbrojovka Brno moved to the renovated Městský fotbalový stadion Srbská, about four kilometers away . After that the sports facility was closed. Several renovation plans followed, but all of them failed for political or financial reasons. An application for the 2020 European Football Championship was planned. The draft had been in place since 2008, but the city was unable to finance the project. After the renovation, there would have been space for 30,000 visitors, which would have been enough to host the European Championship games. The costs ranged from 1.6 to 2.2 billion CZK (63 to 87 million euros ). The Czech football association Fotbalová asociace České republiky (FAČR) would have financially supported the project, but the city did not hold talks with the FAČR. Two years later a reduced version of the original design was available. The number of places has been reduced from 30,000 to around 22,000. The cost was estimated at CZK 500 million (EUR 18.5 million). In September 2015 details about the stadium and the implementation of the project should be published. Construction could have started in early 2016.
In 2015, the player Petr Švancara and fans of Zbrojovka Brno teamed up with sponsors to make the completely overgrown stadium playable again. The then 37-year-old Švancara was planning his farewell game at the Za Lužánkami stadium . The former captain of FC Zbrojovka Brno was already active as a ball boy in the stadium when he was a child. The tiers had to be cleared of bushes, shrubs and even young trees. It was similar on the field. Many volunteers took part in the clearance work. The farewell game took place on June 27 of that year. 35,000 visitors gathered to say goodbye to Švancara. In addition to football players ( Milan Pacanda , Luděk Zelenka , Pavel Horváth , Jiří Štajner , Ladislav Volešák , Jan Trousil , Patrik Siegl , Karel Kroupa , Josef Hron , Karel Jarůšek and Josef Mazura ) were among others. a. also ice hockey player ( Jakub Voráček , Ondřej Pavelec , Jiri Tlusty , Radek Smoleňák , Martin Havlát and Petr Hubacek ) come to the party. There were 35,000 spectators in the stadium for the game. This was 10,000 more than the permitted number of 25,000. In March 2016, the city announced on its website the follow-up of the stadium renovation. The infrastructure in the district must be improved. They want to acquire copyright for the stadium's design and update and adapt it before construction can begin. The council members agreed and the municipal company Brněnské komunikace was entrusted with the task. The trigger for the renewed push of the project was the farewell game of Petr Švancara.
From time to time the facility is used for concerts . A car concert took place in the stadium in June 2020.
