Dilsen-Stokkem is a Belgian city ​​in the Flanders region with 20,590 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It borders directly on the Netherlands and lies on the left bank of the Meuse . It emerged from the merger of the former municipalities and today's districts Dilsen , Stokkem (German Stockheim ), Elen , Lanklaar and Rotem .

In the Middle Ages, Stokkem was more important than Dilsen, it had belonged to the County of Loon since before the year 1000 and was one of the 23 "good cities" ( bonnes villes / Goede Steden ) of the Principality of Liège from 1362 onwards . The place is mentioned for the first time in 1181 as Stockheim in a papal bull ( ... Ecclesiam et cellam in Stockheim, mansum in Kessenich ... ).

Maastricht is 19 kilometers south, Hasselt 29 kilometers southwest, Liège 45 kilometers south and Brussels approx. 97 kilometers west.

The next motorway exits are to the east at Born and Urmond on the Dutch A2 / E 25 and to the south at Maasmechelen on the Belgian A2 / E 314 .

In Genk , Geleen are the next and Maastricht regional stations .
