The airport rail link , usually only Airport Rail Link , is a light rail in public transport from Bangkok , which the Suvarnabhumi Airport with downtown Bangkok, capital of Thailand combines. The operator is a subsidiary of the Thai State Railroad (SRT), the SRT Electrified Train (SRTET). The official opening took place on December 5, 2009, the paid passenger service began on August 23, 2010. The drivers are to be provided by Siemens, as the drivers of the SRT allegedly have not yet been sufficiently trained.

Airport Rail Link Express in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center

The electric multiple units (EMU), based on the Desiro UK Class 360 , are part of the Siemens Desiro family of vehicles developed by Siemens Mobility . The manufacturer received the order for the vehicles worth 58.4 million euros on March 31, 2005. The multiple units were produced in the Siemens factory in Krefeld - Uerdingen , while customer acceptance took place in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center . On November 9, 2007, the first two trains were officially presented in Bangkok. Before that, they were shipped from Bremerhaven in a 38-day voyage to the overseas port of Laem Chabang . They were transported over 130 kilometers by road to a depot in Bangkok. Another four trains were shipped in December 2007.

Express multiple unit

The four-part, air-conditioned express multiple units have a total of 164 seats in three carriages in a 2 + 2 arrangement, six folding seats , a wheelchair space and a toilet. The fourth car serves as a baggage car. The trains carry up to 2,980 passengers per hour and direction. Externally, the trains have a distinctive red stripe on a white base above and below the continuous dark gray window line. The four express multiple units were already on test drives in the Wildenrath test center in June 2007.

City-Line multiple unit

The three-part, air-conditioned City-Line multiple units with 150 bench seats in the longitudinal direction and calculated for 595 standing places, transport up to 680 people per hour and direction. Externally, the trains have a distinctive blue stripe on a white base color above and below the continuous dark gray window line. There are five City Line multiple units in operation.

Overall project

The consortium leaders B. Grimm International Ltd. and B.Grimm MBM Hong Kong Ltd. lead the overall project, with Stecon (Sino Thai Engineering and Construction Plc.) being responsible for the construction of the line. Siemens TS is responsible for the design, delivery and assembly of the electrics and mechanics of the overall project, including vehicles, track construction, control and safety technology, telecommunications, automatic fare collection, tunnel equipment, power supply systems and the check-in systems.

The cost of the entire project in January 2005 was estimated at 25.9 billion baht (around 600 million euros). In March 2007, a funding gap of 18 billion baht became apparent, with the total cost now estimated at 30 billion baht.

The original plan was for the line to be completed by November 2007. However, the traction power supply was not put into operation until January 17, 2009, so that the next day the first train began with test drives up to 160 km / h between the Klong Ton Depot and Suvarnabhumi Airport. On February 12, 2009, an express train took place for prominent guests, including the chairman of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), Youtdana Tupcharoen , and the Thai Minister of Transport, Sophon Zarum . The route of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link was completed in 2009 and the entire railway system was put into operation. Tests of the infrastructure have been taking place since January 2009, particularly signaling systems and automatic baggage handling systems. After the public had been able to use the connection between the airport and the Phaya Thai stop free of charge for several days, normal, paid passenger services began on 23 August 2010.

More than 93 percent of the track on which the Express and City Line runs is elevated, with almost one kilometer at ground level and the airport train station underground. The maximum gradient is four percent.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport Express Line (unofficially called the Violet Line ) connects Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi Airport with the capital Bangkok without stopping over a distance of 25.7 kilometers. It runs every 45 minutes between 6 a.m. and midnight; the journey time from the airport to the terminus at Makkasan station is around 15 minutes. A single trip costs 90 baht, the return trip costs 150 baht per person. Another express line runs every hour to the terminus Phaya Thai; the journey time is 19 minutes.

The running on the same tracks range of Suvarnabhumi Airport City Line (unofficial name: Red line ), however, extends over a length of 28.5 kilometers from the airport next to the city of Bangkok in and ends with six intermediate stops, at the railway station Phaya Thai with Transfer to the Bangkok Skytrain . The journey time from the airport to Phaya Thai train station is around 30 minutes. During the operating hours, which, like the Express Line, are between 6 a.m. and midnight, the City Line trains run every 15 minutes. Up to and including December 31, 2010 the fare on the City Line was a uniform 15 baht per person, after which a distance-dependent tariff of 15 to 45 baht was introduced.

At Makkasan Station , the so-called City Air Terminal , it is possible to change from the City Line to the Express and to the Bangkok MRT subway at Phetchaburi station (abbreviation: PET, Thai: สถานี เพชรบุรี ). A check-in for the airport has been set up here.

The train operation is to be carried out by DB International GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn . This was also responsible for installing the signal systems and training the staff.
