Svenska Cellulosa AB , or SCA for short , is a Swedish forest operator and wood processor. SCA is the largest private forest owner in Europe. A total of around 2.6 million hectares of forest are managed. That is almost the size of Belgium .
Before the division was spun off as Essity in mid-2017, SCA was one of the largest manufacturers of cellulose and paper products , active in the tissue paper and packaging sector. SCA is a public company originally based in Stockholm , since the spin-off from Essity in Sundsval , Sweden . Before the spin-off from Essity , the company had approximately 44,000 employees (as of 2015).
history
SCA was founded in 1929 by Ivar Kreuger as a holding company for ten Swedish companies in the wood industry. In 1975, SCA acquired the company Mölnlycke AB , a leading European supplier of hygiene products, and in 1990, the on transport packaging companies specializing Reed Pack . In March 2007, SCA acquired the traditional brand Tempo from Procter & Gamble .
In the course of the takeover of Tempo, SCA had to sell its own handkerchief brand "Softis" according to the European Commission. Together with the associated trademarks and processing machines, the Italian tissue company Sofidel (whose handkerchief brand is “Regina”) has bought the “Softis” handkerchief brand. The sale also included the rights to use the “Zewa” umbrella brand for a period of three years. However, SCA retains a license to sell "Softis" in countries outside of Germany and Austria.
On the German-speaking private customer market, SCA is among other things with the brands Zewa (brand and former company name of the acquired Papierwerke Waldhof-Aschaffenburg AG in Raubling ), which emerged from a merger of Zellstofffabrik Waldhof AG and Aschaffenburger Zellstoffwerke AG , Danke , Cozy and Tena represented, in Austria also with the handkerchief brand Feh . The Tork brand has been introduced internationally in the commercial sector .
In the wake of the financial crisis that began in 2007 , SCA announced in April 2009 that after declining profitability in the corrugated board and tissue paper sectors, it would close eleven European plants and cut around 2200 jobs. Due to the major economic problems, the focus of the announced plant closures was mainly on Eastern European plants.
In Germany, SCA Hygiene Products operates as a subsidiary of Svenska Cellulosa AB , which holds 96% of the shares. The company has been trading as SCA GmbH since 2013 .
In April 2017, it was decided to separate the hygiene and forest products business areas. The provider of hygiene products now operates under the name Essity. Essity went public on June 15, 2017.
