Toranosuke "Tora" Takagi ( Japanese 高木 虎 之 介 Takagi Toranosuke ; born February 12, 1974 in Shizuoka ) is a Japanese racing driver.
Junior years
Takagi came to racing through his father, a touring car driver. He started kart racing in the early 1980s. After several race wins and two Japanese championship titles (A2 National Kart Series), he switched to Formula Toyota in 1992. Via the Japanese Formula 3 , Takagi finally reached the Japanese Formula 3000 , later Formula Nippon . In 1997 he was first a test driver for the Tyrrell Formula 1 team before becoming a regular driver in 1998 .
Formula 1 career
Takagi was the sixth Japanese in Formula 1 when he first competed for Tyrrell at the 1998 Australian Grand Prix . However, he did not achieve any top results, also because his team was one of the laggards of Formula 1. So he remained without World Championship points, but managed at least two places in the top ten (ninth in each case) at Silverstone and Monza . He had his team-mate Ricardo Rosset under control throughout the season.
After the sale of the Tyrrell team, Takagi moved to Arrows in 1999 , who were also a backcountry team. The season started promisingly with a 7th place in Australia and 8th place in Brazil . In contrast to the current regulation, there were no championship points for this. The rest of the season was very disappointing for him with starting positions mostly at the end of the field and series failures. Since he did not get a Formula 1 cockpit after the 1999 season, Takagi's Formula 1 career ended and he went back to Japan for the time being.
American racing series
After his less than happy Formula 1 time, Takagi drove back to Formula Nippon for the time being, where he immediately became a superior champion in 2000 . Then he made the leap into the American CART series. He drove for Walker Racing from 2001 and finished 21st in the championship. His best result of the season was fourth in Houston . The 2002 CART season went better with a total of seven placements in the top ten and a final 15th place in the championship. His best result was also fourth.
For 2004, Takagi got a cockpit in the second major American formula racing series, the IndyCar Series in Mo Nunn's team . The 2003 IndyCar Series season was quite successful with championship rank 10. The highlights of the season were rank five as the best rookie at the Indianapolis 500 and a podium finish with rank three at Texas Motor Speedway . However, Takagi only managed two seasons in the IRL. After the somewhat disappointing 15th place in the 2004 IndyCar Series season , he went back to Japan to start again in Formula Nippon.
In addition to formula series, Takagi also drove sports car races. In the 1990s he competed in the Porsche Supercup , in 2005 he won the Japanese Super GT Championship together with Yūji Tachikawa in a Toyota Supra .
