The 10th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 14th led over 179 km from Chambéry to Gap . On this low mountain range there were two sprint ratings and three mountain ratings, one of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd category. After Markus Eibegger had given up the day before, 181 of the 198 registered participants started.
Race course
After about five kilometers through the neutral zone, the race was cleared at 13:02. Several drivers attacked immediately, including Tony Martin , Jaroslaw Popowytsch , Matthew Lloyd , Pierrick Fédrigo and Maarten Tjallingii , but the field did not let them move. In a fall, Robert Hunter , among others , fell, but he was able to continue. The Lampre pulled on the sprint to the first intermediate sprint, which, ultimately, the Lampre rider Alessandro Petacchi won, followed by Thor Hushovd and Robbie McEwen . In another fall, Popovych fell to the ground. A group of four around Tony Martin managed to break away briefly, but were caught again.
Finally, a group of four formed again, this time consisting of Sérgio Paulinho , Mario Aerts , Dries Devenyns and Wassil Kiryjenka , which could now pull away. The favorites teams now wanted to calm the field and prevent further attacks. However, this did not suit the French drivers who wanted to put themselves in the limelight on their national holiday and so some attacked. Maxime Bouet and Pierre Rolland were able to set themselves apart. After they had made up a gap of over one and a half minutes on the previous top group, they reached these 66 kilometers after the start, so that it now consisted of six drivers. Meanwhile, the Saxo Bank team finally calmed down in the field on this hot day.
The lead of the outliers quickly increased to over nine minutes at a slow pace. The first mountain classification on the Côte de Laffrey was won by Mario Aerts. In the field, Jérôme Pineau defeated the previous wearer of the dotted jersey, Anthony Charteau, in the fight for the last mountain points to be awarded . Since it was the only mountain classification of the day in which more than six drivers, including some from the main field, got points, Pineau took back the dotted jersey with one point ahead of Charteau. In the leading group, Aerts also won the third mountain classification. The group's lead then grew to over ten minutes, the largest lead of a breakaway group so far in this Tour de France. On the ascent to the Col du Noyer, Bouet had to let go at times. Aerts was again the first to cross the mountain. In the field, Christophe Moreau attacked in this mountain classification, although there were no more points.
In the top group, Kiryjenka drove first over the last sprint classification. This was followed by a non-categorized mountain, on whose ascent Bouet had to tear down first. Then there were the first attacks in the leading group, starting with Aerts, followed by Kiryjenka. An attack by Devenyns followed, followed by Paulinho and Kiryjenka. They overtook him and took the lead. Meanwhile, Nicolas Roche and Rémi Pauriol left the field . Paulinho and Kiryjenka drove together to the finish, where Paulinho finally won the sprint for the stage win. They were followed by Devenyns, Rolland and Aerts, more than a minute behind. The defeated Bouet crossed the finish line more than three minutes behind. Roche and Pauriol reached the goal before the field, which was more than 14 minutes behind. The sprint of the field was won by Mark Cavendish ahead of Alessandro Petacchi and Thor Hushovd . This did not change anything in terms of placement in the sprint classification.
