Umberto di Lelio

Umberto di Lelio (* 1890 in Rome , † 1946 in Milan ) was an Italian opera singer (bass) and vocal teacher. He was a representative of the bel canto tradition of the Italian school, focusing on the Italian and French opera repertoire of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His performance builds on the singing teaching of the singing teacher and singer Manuel Garcia .

Life

Umberto di Lelio studied singing in Rome with Antonio Cotogni (1831-1916).

In 1916 he made his debut in the theater of the Alhambra in Taranto as Cirillo in the opera Fedora and in 1922 at La Scala in Milan . Here he sang from 1921 to 1941 on a permanent contract in Italian, French and German opera, including 1922 in the world premiere of the opera Debora and Jaele by Ildebrando Pizzetti , and in 1929 in the Italian premiere of the opera Das Märchen vom Tsar Saltan by Rimski-Korsakow and in 1936 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa in the Italian premiere of the opera Arabella by Richard Strauss .

Di Lelio had worked out around 70 games at La Scala. He retired from the stage in 1941.

As a bel canto singer, Umberto di Lelio was also able to sing the Wagner repertoire in bel canto based on Richard Wagner's original idea of ​​a bel canto style. Wagner's operas were performed in Italian at La Scala.

Di Lelio was also highly valued in Italy as a singing teacher and bel canto singing teacher, especially by colleagues from Scala and other great singers. His students, colleagues and friends included a large group of national and international artists - including Toscanini .
