The University of Prishtina Hasan Prishtina ( Albanian  Universiteti i Prishtinës Hasan Prishtina ; Latin Universitas Studiorum Prishtiniensis ) is a university in the Kosovar capital Pristina . The university named after Hasan Prishtina was founded in 1970 and is the largest educational and research institution in the country. The university has been a member of the network of Balkan universities since 2010 .

history

The university, founded on February 15, 1970, was until 1989 the only university of the Albanian majority in the autonomous province of Kosovo. It was taught in both Albanian and Serbian in accordance with the University Act of 1969 . For a long time it was the only Albanian-speaking university in what was then Yugoslavia , which is why there were also students from Macedonia , Serbia and Montenegro .

The introduction of the compulsory Serbian curriculum in 1991 with the establishment of Serbian as the sole language of instruction at schools and universities in Kosovo led to disputes that were presented in different ways.

According to Albanian accounts, the Albanian professors and students were all evicted from the faculty buildings by the police in the 1991/92 school year, and Serbian teachers and students moved into the buildings. According to Serbian statements, the Albanian faculty and students left the university voluntarily as part of the boycott of the mandatory Serbian curriculum.

The Kosovar Albanians relocated their teaching to private houses and apartments, where lessons and exams were continued in Albanian.

On September 1, 1996 (entered into force on March 23, 1998), at the suggestion of Ibrahim Rugova and under international mediation, Agreement 3 + 3 was concluded in Belgrade , which was supposed to enable the return of Albanian faculty and students to the university. Under the 3 + 3 agreement , the Albanians "received" 60%, the Serbs 35% and the Turkish minority 5% of the university.

During the war in Kosovo , a Serbian professor and two employees were killed in the building of the Faculty of Economics in 1999. In the same year, 1999, the Serbian faculty left the faculty building of the University of Pristina and moved into available buildings in the north of Mitrovica . This Serbian university is still called the University of Pristina - Kosovska Mitrovica .

In return, the Albanian faculty returned to the faculty building of the University of Pristina and continues to use the original university name.

In February 2014 there was student unrest which led to the resignation of Rector Ibrahim Gashi. The Board of Directors elected Naser Sahiti as the new Rector to succeed him. Marjan Dema has headed the university since his election in 2016; he has been a member of the university's administrative board since 2008. The university was in 2019 host the international workshop of Rotary International on issues of malaria and the importance of mosquitoes in the transmission of diseases.

Faculties

The university has 13 faculties at several locations. Among them are next to the Philological Faculty of Philosophy Faculty, the Medical Faculty of Economics Faculty of Law Faculty, the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Agricultural Faculty in Pristina and the Pedagogical Faculty in Prizren , a School of Woodworking and Materials Science in Gjilan and a Faculty of Geology and Mining in South Mitrovica .
