The University of Utah (also The U , U of U or UU is called) is a state university in Salt Lake City in the US state of Utah . There are currently 29,192 students enrolled. The university is particularly known for its research and teaching in the fields of computer science , medicine and population biology . The University of Utah Medical Center gained widespread fame in 1983 when Barney Clark - a Seattle dentist - received the first artificial heart, which he lived with for 122 days.
history
The university was founded on February 28, 1850 by Brigham Young , prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Mormons"), then called the University of Deseret . Just two years later, the university had to close for financial reasons. In 1867 it was reopened as a commercial college and was given its current name in 1894. Since 1900, the campus has been two miles east of downtown.
The University of Utah took part in Arpanet in 1969 , the forerunner of today's Internet . Together with three other research institutions, this makes it one of the first four participants to be connected with one another using Internet technology.
In August 2020, the University paid around 460,000 dollars (390,000 EUR) ransom to cyber criminals . They had previously encrypted around 0.02 percent of the data stored by the university using a ransomware attack and demanded the money to decrypt it . Although the affected data could be restored from system backups , the university decided to pay. The reason for this was that the data concerned contained employee and student information. The payment was intended to prevent this information from being published on the Internet , which is what criminals often do otherwise.
