The US Highway 89A (short US 89A ) is a United States highway in the United States . It is a variant of US Highway 89 , the A stands for alternative . The highway opens up the east of the Arizona Strip , the sparsely populated and inaccessible north-west of Arizona. In this section, the road is also called Fredonia-Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Road .

The route of the US 89A belonged to the US 89 until the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam . Since 1960 this has been running on a new, more northerly road that crosses the Glen Canyon Bridge . The old route then became US Highway 89A.

From 1941 to 1992 there was another road in Arizona that was named US Highway 89A. It began on US 89 north of Prescott and ended again on US 89 in Flagstaff . This section has been designated Arizona State Route 89A since 1992 .

The section between the Arizona border and US 89 in Kanab belonged to Utah State Route 11 for some time. With the law of March 11, 2008, it was renamed US Highway 89A again.

The highway begins south of Page on US Highway 89 and ends again in Kanab on US 89.

In its course, the US 89A crosses the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry on the Navajo Bridge , runs below the Vermilion Cliffs , over the Kaibab Plateau and through Fredonia . To the east, the road runs through part of the Navajo Nation . Arizona State Route 67 branches off at Jacob Lake , which ends as a cul-de-sac after 49 km on the north rim of the Grand Canyon in the national park of the same name.
