Versus You is a four-piece punk-rock, pop-punk band from Luxembourg , founded by Eric Rosenfeld and Giordano Bruno in 2005. In 2014, " Le Quotidien " described the band with its almost 10-year history as an "institution in the Luxembourg rock scene" ("une institution de la scène rock locale"). The band has released four albums plus a split album with White Flag and toured internationally.

Band history

The Beginnings and the Marathon (2006)

The long-time friends, both musicians, had already played in other Luxembourg bands, separately at Rise-Up and The Last Millennium Suckers and together at Broken Stars, so it didn't take Eric Rosenfeld, who had already written a handful of songs, long to get to know Giordano Bruno to convince him to play the bass in his new band Versus You . A few weeks later Pit Romersa joined them on drums, with whom they recorded their first album Marathon (released in 2006 by Fond of Life Records). Romersa later left the band to devote more time to his main band, Eternal Tango .

This Is The Sinking (2008) and first tour

Drummer number two, Mike Lahier, quickly joined them and recorded a second album with them. Although the album was titled This Is The Sinking (released in 2008 by Winged Skull Records), it got the band a lot of attention, the song The Hotel Room topped the national charts and was in heavy rotation. More than 900 people came to the album's release party. In the same year Versus You also played at the Rock-A-Field Festival in Roeser .

After a first tour through Germany , Belgium , the Netherlands and Italy , guitarist Jimmy Leen, who later became a second songwriter, joined the band. They opened up for No Use for a Name and The Flatliners , which they quickly became friends with. At the last Flatliners concert, Mike Lahier split from Versus You because of personal differences.

Just in time for the first Eastern Europe and Russia tour, Aloyse Weyler joined the band as the third drummer. They played concerts with NOFX , Propagandhi , Only Crime , White Flag and Bayside .

The Mad Ones (2009) and Levitate the Listener (2011)

Their third album, which they recorded right after they returned home with Charel Stoltz, shows that Versus You never really take a break. The title of the album The Mad Ones (released in 2009 by Granny Records in collaboration with Fond of Life Records) is a perfect description for the band and refers to Eric's source of inspiration from the American writer Jack Kerouac .

After a second tour through Eastern Europe and Russia and countless concerts, including again at the Rock-A-Field Festival, Weyler also left the band.

Jerry Kirpach, a friend of the band, took the vacant position on drums and promised to break the curse of Versus You and not to leave it again after a short time. They recorded a new single called This War Is Like a Drug to You! and six more new songs for a split album with White Flag. In the same year appearances with Alkaline Trio , Strike Anywhere , Dead to Me , Dear Landlord and Star Fucking Hipsters followed. Levitate The Listener (released by Long Beach Records and G Chord Records) was released in 2011.

In 2011 they shared the stage with bands like Adolescents , Mike Herrera from MxPx , Dead to Me , The Casualties and Rise Against and went on a European tour with White Flag.

In 2012 Versus You were selected from more than 500 bands to play at the Groezrock Festival in Belgium. With longtime producer Charel Stoltz they recorded a new single called Happy Yet ?! and went to Sweden to record their fourth album with producer Chips Kiesbye, who has worked with Millencolin and The Hellacopters .

In spring 2013 Jimmy Leen left the band to devote himself entirely to his new Fox project . He was replaced by Giordano's younger brother Dario Bruno who was previously active in the bands Extinct , Nervous Chillin and The Last Millennium Suckers . Concerts with Strung Out , Black Flag , The Manix and Jimmy Eat World followed.

style

They describe their music style as follows: “Our songwriting is very much inspired by Berkeley , Minneapolis and Chicago punk bnads like Crimpshrine , Fifteen , Jawbreaker , The Replacements , Hüsker Dü and Naked Raygun and many other 90's punk bands, but also non- Punk acts like Big Star , Alex Chilton , Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers , The Kinks and Paul Westerberg are a source of inspiration. We try to be honest and true to ourselves and everyone else, sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fail miserably. We're always broke because we put everything we have into this band. The name "Versus You" means absolutely nothing! "
