The Waldau Stadium (officially Gazi Stadium on the Waldau since 2004 due to name sponsorship ), formerly Kickers-Platz or Kickers-Stadion , is a football stadium in the Degerloch district of Stuttgart . The facility is located about 200 meters from the Stuttgart TV tower and has a capacity of 11,408 spectators (2,211 of which are covered seats and 4,845 are covered standing places). With its location almost 500 meters above sea level, the stadium is one of the highest in Germany. It is the home of the league football club Stuttgarter Kickers and VfB Stuttgart II (since 2008, not all home games since 2016 ) as well as the American football team of the Stuttgart Scorpions in the German Football League (GFL).

The Waldau Stadium is the oldest stadium in Germany.

history

The football department of the Stuttgarter Kickers has played its home games in the stadium since 1905, the year it was inaugurated. No other German football club plays its home games in the same place for so long. However, during their time in the 1st Bundesliga (1988/89 and 1991/92) , the Kickers played in the Neckar Stadium for safety reasons , so that the Kickers did not continuously play in the Waldau Stadium.

Until 1975, the stadium still had a wooden grandstand that was modeled on that of the English football club Arsenal FC on a scale of 1: 3, but this had to give way to a new main grandstand due to various requirements of the DFB in 1976. After the previous names Kickers-Platz and Kickers-Stadion , the stadium was officially named Waldau-Stadion in 1987 .

The Stuttgart Scorpions have been using the stadium since they were promoted to the German Football League in 1995. In 2001 the annual HipHop Open music festival was held there, which then found a new home in the Stuttgart riding stadium. On October 6, 2007, the final of the German Bowl XXIX (German championship in American football) between the Stuttgart Scorpions and the Braunschweig Lions was played in the Gazi Stadium. The guests won in front of 8,152 spectators with 27: 6.

On July 17, 2008, the Stuttgart City Council decided to renovate the stadium for a total of 5.4 million euros in order to meet the DFB requirements for the third division venues. The capacity would have increased to 12,000 seats (2,000 covered seats and 10,000 standing places). Construction should start in January 2009 and completion was scheduled for July 2009. At the end of 2008, however, the Stuttgart city council decided to postpone the renovation indefinitely. Due to the relegation of the Stuttgarter Kickers to the Regionalliga Süd for the 2009/10 season, it would no longer have been necessary anyway. When the third division was introduced in 2008, only the wooden benches in the main stand were replaced with blue bucket seats.

In the course of promotion to the third division in 2012, the renovation plans were brought out again. The old main grandstand, which was built in 1976, was demolished on May 19, 2014 and replaced by a new one by February 2015. The new main grandstand has 2211 seats and thus also meets the requirements for the third division. Due to the high altitude of the stadium, games were often canceled in the winter months before the renovation, which is why turf heating was installed, which the DFB recommends, but only stipulates from the 2nd Bundesliga. The renovation cost a total of 14.6 million euros.

Due to defects, the roof of the opposite stand was torn down in 2016 and replaced by a new building at the end of 2018. The construction costs amounted to 640,000 euros.

Name sponsorship

In July 2004 the name of the stadium was sold for ten years to the German main sponsor Garmo AG , which sells its dairy products under the name Gazi . Since then, the stadium has been officially called Gazi Stadium on the Waldau . In October 2012, the naming rights were extended for a further ten years until 2024.
