Georg Heinrich Walter Schmitt (born October 11, 1914 in Mainz , † March 28, 1994 in Cochem ) was a German CDU politician .

Life

Schmitt attended the Realgymnasium in Mainz, which he left in 1933 after passing the high school diploma. This was followed by a degree in political science and law, which he completed with a doctorate in 1938. He was then a judge at the local courts in Oppenheim , Groß-Gerau , Osthofen and Mainz . After serving in the war during the Second World War , he was appointed to the Mainz Regional Court in 1946 , where he held the office of Regional Court Councilor. A year later he moved to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice as a member of the government . From 1951 he headed a department of the Interior Ministry. In 1953 he came to the State Chancellery and was one of the closest employees of the then Prime Minister Peter Altmeier , two years later he took over the management there and rose to the position of ministerial director. In July 1957 he was finally appointed regional president in the Koblenz administrative district . He held this post for ten years.

politics

In 1967 Schmitt switched to politics. In that year he was elected to the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament for the first time . There he represented his adopted home, the district of Cochem , later Cochem-Zell . Until 1983 he was a member of the state parliament.

engagement

From 1968 to 1973 Schmitt was chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate regional association of the German Forest Protection Association and then its honorary chairman. In 1973 he was elected President of the Rhineland-Palatinate Regional Association of the German Red Cross . After leaving office, he was its honorary president from 1990. He participated in the founding of the Rhineland-Palatinate / Burgundy friendship group and was its vice-president for several years. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Mainz Institute for European History.
