The coat of arms of Sudan was introduced in 1969. It shows a secretary wearing a shield from the time of Muhammad Ahmad , the self-proclaimed Mahdi who briefly ruled Sudan in the 19th century . The typical African bird is chosen as a unique selling point compared to the Arab Saladin eagles and Quraish falcons . The coat of arms bears two Arabic script banners: the upper one shows the state mottoالنصر لنا an-naṣr lanā (English: 'Victory is ours'), the lower the state nameجمهورية السودان ǧumhūrīyat as-sūdān (German: 'Republic of Sudan').
The color scheme of the coat of arms is based on the pan-Arabic colors .
