Wickie and the Strong Men ( Japanese 小 さ な バ イ キ ン グ ビ ッ ケ , Chiisana Baikingu Bikke , German "The Little Viking Vicke") is an animated television series first broadcast in 1974 based on the children's book series Wickie by Runer Jonsson . Like Maya the Bee and Pinocchio, it was produced as an anime in Japan on behalf of ZDF and ORF .
action
Wickie is a little boy with red-blonde, shoulder-length hair who lives with his parents Ylva and Halvar, the village chief, in the small Viking village of Flake. He's not your typical Viking boy, he's naturally fearful and not particularly strong. But he convinces with his pronounced intelligence, with which he supports adults and friends time and again even in seemingly hopeless situations and helps them to find a solution.
Together with Halvar and his crew of more or less "strong" men, Wickie experiences new dangerous or funny adventures in every episode. At first he had to assert himself against the skepticism of the team, but quickly developed into a mascot, without which the Vikings would no longer want to travel.
Wickie's problem solutions often do not correspond to his time: on the one hand, he takes inspiration from history (e.g. the Trojan horse ), but on the other hand he could also pass as a mathematician or physicist of later centuries. Conversely, through this modern general knowledge, he makes it easy for young viewers to identify with him. He shows that a hero can definitely be who, instead of muscle strength and courage, uses his mind and is able to think logically.
Presentation and implementation as a television series
The literary model for the series was the 1963 children's book Wickie und die stark Männer and its follow-up volumes , written by the Swedish writer Runer Jonsson , who received the German Youth Book Prize for it in 1965 .
The initiator of the television series was Josef Göhlen , the head of the ZDF children's and youth program at the time . His original project of realizing Wickie as a 13-part puppet show was never implemented. In order to keep the costs for an animated series as low as possible, the ZDF entered into its first international cooperation with the ORF and commissioned the Japanese animation studio Zuiyo Enterprise to implement the original literary version. From 1972 to 1974 the studio produced an anime series with 78 episodes of 23 minutes each and an 85-minute film of the same name. Directed by Chikao Katsui (episodes 1–26), Hiroshi Saitō (episodes 27–52; also director of the cartoon series Maya the Bee and Pinocchio ) and Kōzō Kusuba (from episode 53). The figure design came from Shūichi Seki .
