Wikno ( German  Wickno , 1938 to 1945 Wickenau ) is a small town in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and belongs to the Gmina Szczytno (rural municipality Ortelsburg ) in the powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ).

Geographical location

Wikno is located on the eastern bank of the Waldpuschsee ( Polish Jezioro Wałpusz ) in the southern center of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It is eight kilometers in a south-westerly direction to the district town of Szczytno ( Ortelsburg in German  ).

history

The place called Wickno after 1785 and Wykno before 1871 was founded as a forestry between 1811 and 1820. Until 1945 it was assigned to the state forest Korpellen (Polish Korpele ) and the place was a residential area of Klein Jerutten ( Polish Jerutki ) in the East Prussian district of Ortelsburg . Because the name “Wikno” was too foreign according to the political-ideological point of view at the time, the place was renamed “Wickenau” on June 3rd - officially confirmed on July 16th - 1938.

As a result of the war, all of southern East Prussia and with it the Wickenau forestry department came to Poland in 1945 . It received the Polish form of the name "Wikno". As a forest settlement ( Osada leśna in Polish ) it is now a place within the rural community Szczytno (Ortelsburg) in the powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ), until 1998 of the Olsztyn Voivodeship , since then it has belonged to the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship .

church

Until 1945 Wickno resp. Wickenau parish in the Evangelical Church of Klein Jerutten in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union and in the Roman Catholic Church of Ortelsburg in the then diocese of Warmia . Today Wikno belongs to the Protestant parish Szczytno within the diocese of Masuria of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland and to the Catholic Church Jerutki in the current Archdiocese of Warmia .
