Yes We Can ( English for "Yes we can"; accordingly, "Yes, we can do that," even: "Yes, we can") who was campaigning - slogan of the former US president Barack Obama . He first appeared in a speech by Obama after the area code in the state of New Hampshire on January 8, 2008, in which he asked the audience how to solve the major global political issues, whether to justice, prosperity, world peace could create: repeated response he repeatedly: "Yes, we can". This motto was not originally intended as a slogan (this was actually Change we can believe in ), but due to the high popularity and the connection that most people make between “Yes, we can” and Obama, this slogan was then used in the election campaign mainly used.

The slogan is modeled on the union call Yes we can , which the agricultural workers' unionists César Chávez and Dolores Huerta coined as Sí se puede in 1972 . The exclamation Yes we can! Also appears in the English version of the song by Bob the Builder , which is said to have also inspired Obama. The Beatles use Yes we can in their song All You Need Is Love, released on June 25, 1967, at the end of the lyrics as an interjection.

The slogan was incorporated into a song of the same name that was published on February 2, 2008 by the singer will.i.am of the hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas on the Dipdive.com website and at the same time on YouTube under the username WeCan08 was set to serve as support for Obama's presidential candidacy.

The song contains appearances by 37 well-known stars, mostly musicians, singers, actors, but also a former basketball player ( Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ), who sing or speak quotes from Obama's speech, combined with excerpts from the speech itself. The song was made by will. i.am produced; the music video was directed by Jesse Dylan , the son of Bob Dylan .

Although the text consists entirely of quotations from Obama's speech, Obama's campaign team had no part in the making of the song.

The viral video , shot only in black and white, processed Obama's original 13-minute New Hampshire speech into a kind of collage of 4 minutes and 30 seconds. The performers repeat Obama's words as a choir using hip-hop or call-and-response technology, while his voice can be heard in the background. The song is essentially in English, with the exception of the translations for “Yes, we can” in Hebrew (1:09 and 1:44, “ken, an (ach) nu yecholim”) and Spanish (1:17, “si, podemos "and 1:57," sí, se puede "), as well as in the sign language American Sign Language (2:04).

The day after the video was released on ABC on February 1, 2008, it was uploaded to Obama's website. Since it was originally posted on YouTube , the video has also been posted there several times by other users. As of February 9, 2008, 12:00 p.m. ( Washington time), it had already been viewed more than 6.25 million times. It was viewed more than 3.38 million times on Dipdive.com - a total of more than 9.64 million hits in about a week. European media also became aware of the video.

In 2008 the video won an Emmy Award in the newly created New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment category .

"Yes We Scan"

After the PRISM surveillance program used by the National Security Agency became known in June 2013, the slogan for "Yes We Scan" (German: Yes, we listen to ) was corrupted . As a result, numerous other media took over the slogan, which was later presented on signs at protest meetings against the ongoing data monitoring .

The German Language Association chose the headline "Yes We Scan" published by Bild.de on November 27, 2013 as " Headline of the Year ", because these three words are better than some leading articles "the disappointment of many Europeans about the surveillance mania of the Obama administration" summarized. On the same day, René Walter, the operator of the weblog Nerdcore , protested against the award. Image did not formulate the slogan itself, but demonstrably only taken it from online media. According to Bild, the editorial team did not accept the award for this very reason.

Others

For the 2008 election, the film director and author Michael Moore published his book with the original title Mike's Election Guide 2008 , which was published by Piper Verlag in German with the title Yes, we can: Mike's ultimate election guide .

Barack Obama ended his last speech as President on these words.
