Augusta is a city and municipality in the Free Community Consortium Syracuse with 35,698 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the region of Sicily in Italy and the name of the island on which part of the city is located.
Location and dates
Augusta is 35 kilometers north of Syracuse . The residents mainly work in industry. Ships , petroleum products , plastics and concrete are produced in Augusta and Augusta-Priolo . Augusta-Priolo is Sicily's largest industrial complex. The port of Augusta stretches along the bay of Augusta. It is both a trading port and a naval base .
The neighborhoods are Augusta, Agnone Bagni and Brucoli . The neighboring communities are Carlentini and Melilli .
history
Augusta was founded by the Normans . Friedrich II developed the port into an important military port . In 1268 the city of Anjou was conquered and fell to the House of Aragon. The city was badly damaged during the Franco-Spanish War in 1676. When earthquake in 1693 the town was completely destroyed. American troops landed here on July 10, 1943 , destroying the city for the last time.
In Augusta there is an airship hangar in which Umberto Nobile built the keel airship N2 in the 1920s . During the Second World War, from 1941 to 1943, a German emergency flight squadron operated from Augusta.
Attractions
Augusta can be reached through the Spanish Gate. The Castello d'Augusta dominates the place. It was built between 1231 and 1241. The fort has a square floor plan. There are four square corner towers on the outside.
The cathedral was built in 1644, but was destroyed in the 1693 earthquake . Then the cathedral was rebuilt. The town hall from 1699 is on the same square.
