The A2004 was a Class I road that began in Guildford in 1922 east of the city center and then circumnavigated it to the north. It became obsolete in 1934 when the Guildford and Godalming Bypass went into operation. Due to the ever increasing motorized traffic, the importance of traffic increased again and the route became a Class I road again, as the A246 was led over it. The number A2004 was used again in Crawley for a north-south road east of the city center, partly built in the 1950s. These are still there today.
