Aleš Hemský (born August 13, 1983 in Pardubice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey and inline hockey player who played 888 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Ottawa Senators , Dallas Stars and Canadiens de Montréal between 1999 and 2018 has played in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Hemský, who spent most of his career with the Edmonton Oilers, became world champion with the Czech national team in 2005 .
Career
Hemský played for HC Pardubice during his junior years , but he moved to North America early on. Here he joined the Olympiques de Hull in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . After a great season there, he was selected as 13th in the first round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers .
He stayed in Hull for another year before making it to the NHL for the 2002/03 season . In the first two seasons he was a solid young player who steadily developed his potential.
When the NHL went on strike for the 2004/05 season , he went back to his homeland and played again for his home club in Pardubice and won the Czech championship at the end of the season . In the same year he won the title at the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championship with the Czech national team .
For the 2005/06 season he returned to the Oilers and, as the team's top scorer, played a key role in the fact that they just qualified for the playoffs. Here the team surprisingly made it into the finals. With two goals and four assists in the final series, he could not prevent the defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes . At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , he won the bronze medal with his national team during that season.
A shoulder injury the following season prevented him from reaching the 77 points from last year. In July 2012, ran his six-year contract for which he total 24.6 million dollars received from. He then signed a new two-year contract worth $ 10 million. Shortly before the trade deadline , Hemský was given to the Ottawa Senators on March 5, 2014 in exchange for two voting rights in the 2014 and 2015 NHL Entry Drafts.
In June 2008 he took part with the Czech national inline hockey team at the IIHF inline hockey world championship and took fifth place.
After a total of 12 years with the Oilers, Hemský moved to the Ottawa Senators in March 2014 , but could not agree on a new contract after the end of the season and therefore joined the Dallas Stars as a free agent in July 2014 .
In September 2016 he took part with the Czech selection in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he finished sixth with the team. However, the attacker sustained a hip injury (tear in the lip of the acetabulum ), which was subsequently treated with an operation at the end of October 2016, so that Hemský was absent for several months. Ultimately, the Czech only played 15 games for the stars this season.
After the 2016/17 season, the Stars did not renew the attacker's expiring contract, so Hemský joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent in July 2017 . There he fulfilled a one-year contract, which was not extended in summer 2018 either. In May 2020, the 36-year-old Czech officially announced the end of his career.
