The Antonov An-148 is a twin- engine regional airliner that was developed by the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonow and serves as the basis for the An-148 family (An-148, An-158, An-168, An-178).

history

The development of the type began in 2001 with the aim of developing a modern and economical regional aircraft as a replacement for the outdated Tupolev Tu-134 and Yakovlev Jak-42 aircraft types that still came from the Soviet Union . The Antonov An-74 TK-300 served as the basis for the design . The original designation was Antonov An-74-400, later it became Antonow An-174, before the final designation An-148 was decided. The first flight of the prototype took place on December 17, 2004. It was approved by the Ukrainian authorities and the Intergovernmental Aviation Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on February 26, 2007. A first letter of intent was signed by Volga-Dnepr Airlines in October 2002 . Further orders followed, including from Aerosvit .

Series production was supposed to start in 2007, but was postponed until mid-2009. The An-148 was initially manufactured both in Kiev near Aviant (Serinij Sawod Antonow, Antonov's department responsible for series production) and in the Voronezh aircraft factory in Russia, which is part of OAK . AeroSvit had ordered 10 copies of the type and took over one of the two pre-series machines in March 2009. On July 28, 2009 the demonstration of the first production aircraft to potential customers took place in Voronezh . In the meantime, series production at VASO in Voronezh had started. On December 21, 2009, the initial customer Rossija started regular service with the model. Since the beginning of 2012, Rossija has been using the An-148 on the St. Petersburg – Vienna route.

On April 28, 2010, the extended version An-158 had its maiden flight. By November 2013, 20 orders had been placed for this machine. Cubana is currently the only airline to use this type.

After altitude tests with the An-158 were completed on November 21, 2013 at the airports of Latakunga ( 2800  m ) in Ecuador and La Paz ( 4000  m ) in Bolivia , a type certificate is being prepared.

On December 26, 2019, the pre-series machine, serial number 01-01, registration UR-NTA, was auctioned. The starting price was US $ 7.4 million. No further information is known.

Cooperation and break with Russia

In 2012, Russia’s parent company Aeroflot declared that it did not want to convert the 6 existing options on this type of aircraft.

Antonov left the Ukrainian-Russian joint venture UAC-Antonov in 2015 .

In April 2015, Rossija suspended all flights with its six An-148W due to the lack of economic efficiency of the aircraft type and insufficient support from the engine manufacturer.

The last machine built in Voronezh made its maiden flight there on October 17, 2018 and is intended for the Russian air force. With 35 copies, more were built in Voronezh than at Antonov in the Ukraine.

In July 2018, Antonov and the Boeing subsidiary Aviall signed an agreement on the An-1X8-Next program. After the end of its cooperation with Russia, the American company should enable the construction of revised versions of the An-148, An-158 and An-178.

Construction and technology

The Antonov An-148 is a shoulder wing , the two turbofan engines of the type Progress D-436 is driven. The tail unit is designed as a T-tail unit. The robust design enables the aircraft to operate without problems even from airports with unpaved runways or airports with poor facilities. The machine has an APU and an air-conditioned pressurized cabin . This can accommodate up to five passengers per row, with a maximum of 92 passengers. The design and structure of the wings and the fuselage borrow from the Antonov An-72 transport aircraft . The An-148 has a glass cockpit and a fly-by-wire control.

Versions

An-158 at the MAKS 2011

The An-148-100A is the basic version for 80 passengers with a range of up to 2,200 km. With the larger seat pitch for a total of 75 passengers and the additional fuel tanks of the An-148-100W, the range increases to up to 3,600 km; this can also be increased to 4400 km with version E. The EA version is designed in a three-class layout with a VIP lounge. A maximum of 89 passengers can be carried (92 for the An-148-201, smallest row spacing, 28 inches). A freight version as the An-148S-100 (with a cargo hatch on the side) or as an An-148T (with a rear ramp) is also available.

An extended version, the (former) An-148-200, for up to 99 passengers, was presented as the An-158 after its maiden flight on April 28, 2010 . Visually, it can be distinguished from the An-148 not only by its dimensions with a 1.7 m extended cabin, but also by the winglets . The aerodynamically revised wings are supposed to reduce fuel consumption by nine percent compared to the An-148. In the meantime, the names of the versions have changed. The above An-148-200, from which the An-158 emerged, is now known as An-158-100, while the versions An-148-100A, W and E are currently known as An-148-201A, W and E (incl . different passenger capacities and ranges).

The An-168 (An-168ABJ, Antonow Business Jet) or An-148VIP, which is based on the long-haul version An-148-300, was also designed. The An-168 differs from the basic model An-148-100 in:

  • the installation of an additional fuel tank with a capacity of 470 kg, which increases the range to up to 7000 km with 8-12 passengers - layout "Elite", approx. 6600 km with 18 passengers and approx. 5300 km with 38 passengers as " Corporate Shuttle ",
  • the installation of winglets at the ends of the wings,
  • the use of composite materials to reduce weight,
  • the installation of a front camera, a high-speed internet access system and a DVD / CD system. Antonov stated the need for around 50 copies.

The Russian Civil Protection Ministry is using two An-148-100EMs as Air MedEvac versions. In addition to 14 seats, 8 intensive care beds or 24 loungers can be fitted.

A variant designed for the transport of 2 standard sea containers weighing up to 15 tons was presented in 2010 as the An-178 . The aircraft has an enlarged fuselage cross-section and a tail ramp. On May 7, 2015, the first prototype completed its maiden flight.

Iran plans to license the An-148; this was announced in May 2009.

In 2013, the long-range variant was 148-300 An-planned, armed based maritime patrol aircraft - / patrol version as An-148-300 MP presented with a range of up to 7,000 kilometers or a 10 hours of operation in the area of operations. An AWACS version (An-148-300DRLV) is being designed for the Ukrainian armed forces and export. There are also considerations for an ISR version (An-148-300ISR) and an EW version (An-148-300EW).

The price for an An-148 or An-158 is - depending on the version - between 24 and 30 million US $.

Incidents

  • On February 11, 2018, the An-148-100W (RA-61704) crashed on the way from Moscow ( Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME)) to Orsk (OSW) shortly after take-off near the suburb of Ramenskoye . All 71 people on board, including 65 passengers and 6 crew members, were killed. The cause was the failure to switch on the heating of the altitude and speed sensors, whereupon they iced up and incorrect displays appeared in the cockpit (see also Saratov Airlines flight 703 ) .
